The Importance Of Being Inducted Into The National Honor Society

To be inducted into the National Honor Society is not a right, but a privilege. There are four important components that one must excel in in order to be inducted – scholarship, leadership, community service, and character. As I speak to you now about scholarship, I realize that I must first define what scholarship actually is. All of you today that are being inducted into the National Honor Society should consider yourself scholars. A scholar, by definition, is a distinguished academic or one who has an aptitude for study. There is an important difference between being a scholar and simply being a student – scholars care quite a bit more. As a member of the National Honor Society myself, I realize how difficult reaching the level of “scholar” can be. I would also like to finish off with this final thought – you are not a number. Though the National Honor Society and St. John’s in general are large and it may seem that you sometimes get lost in the crowd, I would like to assure you that this is not true. Scholarship is not just about your GPA; it is about how dedicated you are and your ability to use knowledge as power rather than as just a means for a higher average. The National Honor Society is a challenging organization to be inducted into and you should all be incredibly proud of yourselves for making it this far. I implore you to recognize that your induction today is not only based off of your GPA but also on your character and your dedication. I hope that you will be able to impact the world as you have impacted the St. John’s community and that you always continue to thrive and do the best that you can.
