The St. Catharines Chamber Music Society
The St. Catharines Chamber Music Society was held at the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre of Brock University in Saint Catharines at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, 18th January, 2013. The four performers mostly showing on the stage, Xiaoling Li, Andrée Simard, Gordon Cleland, Karin Di Bella are violinist, violist, violoncellist, pianist respectively. Then, the soprano Charlotte Knight joined the performance to present us a wonderful and colorful music. The stage in the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre is surrounded by cambered audience seats with five parts separated by four aisles. At the center of the stage, a piano for the concert stands there quietly. When spotlight falls on the piano, the grace of classical music arises in the audience’s hearts, which makes them relaxed and expectant.
The first half of the program included two pieces, Piano Quartet in E-flat major, K. 493 composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Die Gebüsche composed by Franz Schubert. The most impressive piece for me was the first one. It was a chamber music from classical period. This concerto-like quartet had three movements, which gave us an echoing through the performance. There was a material between piano and strings that changes along the piece. The first movement was a sonata-form Allegro. A bright and genial opening establishes the major tone of the entire piece. This sonata-allegro also had a lot of narrow leaps which allows me feel lively. The second movement Larghetto was like a rapt dialogue between piano and strings. It started with solo piano. Then, it has a downcast and made me fell leisure. The third movement Allegretto was the finale of the piece, which has a moderately paced rondo. The characteristics of classical music include symmetrical, balanced phrases melody, dance rhythms, diatonic, tonic-dominant harmony, multimovement sonata-allegro form and homophonic. The violin tonic-dominant and the form of homophonic allowed me ensure that the piece is composed in Classical ear, but not from Baroque

All of them had a good posture, and a good tone. However, I suggest that they could have fewer violins, or more of other instruments. The group played ten pieces throughout the concert. The pieces were the Introduction and Tarantella by Pablo Sarasate, Pezzo Capriccioso Op. 62 by Peter Tchaikovsky, Violin Concerto in D major by Johannes Brahms, Barcarolle in F major by Fryderyk Chopin, Piano Concerto no.2 in F major by Fryderyk Chopin, Clarinet Concerto no.1, in F by Carl Maria von Weber, Caprice no.24 in A minor by Niccolo Paganini, Vioiln Concerto no.2 by Henryk Wieniawski, Etude-Tableauz Op. 39 no.9 by Sergei Rachmaninov and Piano Converto no.3 in C minor by Ludwig van…

Beauty and elegance is what the second movement is all about. The sound of the harpsichord is heard in the beginning of the second movement, followed by the flute and violin soloists. The second movement is for the soloists only, the flute, violin and harpsichord all playing with a sense of cooperation, portraying sombreness. It is soothing and free of the first movement’s tension.…

The Rhodes College Orchestra began the evening with the Palladio by Karl Jenkins. The Palladio had three different movements. The first movement, the Allegretto, started steadily with the double bass, violoncello, and viola. Then, the tempo became faster and the music more intense, with firm bow strokes from the violin. Throughout most of the movement the rhythm was fast, though there were a few measures where the rhythm slows gradually, but only lasting briefly before it revives again. Towards the end, the mood became lighter and more cheerful, leading the piece to a strong and bold ending. The second movement, the Largo, began quietly. The tempo was slow throughout this movement. The melody was quiet during most of the movement, thus making the vibrato more prominent. The music was loud at the center of the movement, but started to get slower and quieter when approaching the end, letting the ending gently fade out. The third movement, the Vivace, was loud and had a very fast tempo. Towards the midpoint the melody changed and became slow with a melody slightly similar to Largo but faster and more joyful. Then, the melody shifted and became a lot like…

Personally notable movements from the first piece of the program, Piano Trio in C Minor, Op. 2, are Andante and Vivace. Pappone, “lauded as a ‘first rate’ violinist by Maestro Lorin Maazel” and founder of the non-profit Delius Music Academy (Mallory Concert Series Program), executed technique perfection from my hearing. His pianoforte was divine and every note softly washed over the audience with pitch precision. Moving from the second to the third movement there was an exaggeration of sad drama. Even by looking at the instrumentalists faces it was clear this was far from an upbeat movement; as the three instruments meshed together in a gloomy way to match the weather. The end of the selection seemed to involve a…

The second piece I am going to discuss is the Symphony No.2 in D Minor, Op. 36 composed by Ludwig van Beethoven(1770-1827). It was in the Classical period, and the genre of it is Symphony because of it had four movements. The first movement is in the Adagio molto form, the second movement is in the Larghetto form, the third movement is in the Scherzo: Allegro form which breaks the rule of most of symphonies, and the fourth movement is in the Allegro molto form. The length of the work is about thirty-five minutes and…

One minute it’s upbeat “Spanish” rhythms and the next is slow and steady romantic pieces for the lovers within the drama. By the use of such musical connotations, the overall impact of the ballet is enhanced; so I would venture to say that this is utility music. I can also see the overall ballet as ternary form due to its three major sections. The first section in act one states the thematic material of a conjunct melody yet vivacious rhythmic patterns, connecting me with the carefree and in love feeling evoked. It carried a more elated structure. The second section, on the other hand, relays the contrasting theme of a darker more ambiguous tone. Then returning to the light in the final section restating that thematic material. However during act three, I also felt it had its own quick three part form. When the unwanted finance’s entrance is accompanied with the loud chromatic music and the cuts at the end of pieces causing disjunct melody are acknowledged, a contrast to the thematic material occurs. Though it does quickly returns to the blissful and contented connotation that began this section and all is well in the end. I was unsure of whether or not that was real or if at this point in time I was just searching for something to write in my notes for my…

The orchestras played this piece to create a great closing to the concert. The conductor made a great decision to arrange this song to be at the end giving almost a sense of closure. The addition of the percussionist again helped give the piece the nice lifted feeling, as well as help the orchestra stay together; however the dynamic contrast between the four sections was rather light. The use of a snare drum drastically changed this piece, it feels more like a slow waltz. The little use of dynamics, however, kept the melody from popping out as much as it should have. In the beginning of the piece everybody played the notes with space between then; however towards the end, a few of orchestra members played the notes smoothly and connected whereas the rest of the orchestra played the notes spaced. The intonation and a steady tempo was retained throughout the performance which gave this piece a focused tone. The violins and violas did an excellent job using full bows, but the cellos needed to use long bows so they can create a deep, rich, and crisp sound. This piece made the audience feel excited and eager to hear more because many of the audience members recognized this…

It was Monday, November 17 cold and snowy outside Ophelia Paris Concert Hall, Truman State University but inside it was all warmth and light as Elaine AuBuchon started the Double Reed Recital. Having not been to any actual classical music concert, I was excited to hear the talent that we have in our campus. I took it upon myself to go with an open mind, without having any previous predispositions that would affect my reaction to the concert. I just wanted to go in there, not knowing anything about the concert, and see what I hear in the music. This concert was open to anyone and free admission. The program presented a variety of styles…

The music piece that I listened to was Symphony No. 94 in G “Surprise” by Joseph Hayden. This classical piece of music takes place in the classical period and starts off with a very slow tempo. The rhythm is a contagious pulsating rhythm which appears to have a metered beat that one can follow. It sounds like it would be 2 beats which is in duple meter. The main melody seems very short, defined and to the point. It is definitely staccato which seems short and separate where legato is smooth and together. The piece begins to get softer and softer when “surprise” loud chord pops up and then the theme and rhythm continue. I hear some violins in the piece with a flute sounding like a homophonic texture. Then as the music plays on, it appears to switch to a polyphonic texture with a second melody added playing with the main melody. The pitch seems to fluctuate between high and low as it hits different parts of the piece. The overall theme seems the same with just different variations of it. The form sounds like it is binary with an ab form. The tone color starts off very peaceful and calm at the beginning. As the piece continues, it gets more lively and energetic with a very strong presence as the loud notes of strings play. The tone color continues to switch between calm, peaceful and vibrant to strong and brilliant especially when the orchestra comes in together. As it reaches the end, it seems very climatic and energetic until it slows down and ends like it began, peaceful and calm. The overall dynamics of this piece starts out soft to very loud continuing back and forth. The main melody can be heard along with parts of contrast from the second melody as it hits the higher points in the piece. The harmony appeared to be tonal with a number of tones and chords all following each other creating a…

The last piece conducted was “A Child’s Garden of Dreams” by David Maslanka. The tone colors of this piece had a pinging and jingly. There was much imitation in this piece and it reminds me of a twilight movie. The rhythm was long and smooth. The tempo was played in andante and the dynamics started in mezzo piano and crescendos to mezzo forte.…

On April 8th, 2016, I attended the “IU South Bend Piano Studio” concert at IUSB. It was performed at Louise E. Addicott and Yatish Joshi Performance Hall in Northside Building. The concert music was picked from a selection of composers who composed during the Classical and Romantic period. There were music pieces (selected movements) by Ludwig Beethoven, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Sergei Prokofiev, and, Claude Debussy. Current students from the IUSB Music department were the ones playing the piano. Each one had a strong ability with the piano, which delivered the music in an amazing way with great combinations of rhythm and the different scales of major and minor. All pieces varied with time range based on the movements, as some were…

On December 5th I attended a concert hosted by La Maison des Jeunesses Musicales du Canada in Montreal. The musicians were all students from La Conservatoire de Musique de Montreal. The compositions presented were three pieces by Johannes Brahms: Sonata in F major for ‘Cello and Piano, Op. 99, Sonata in F minor for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 120 No. 1, and Trio in A minor for Clarinet, ‘Cello and Piano, Op. 114. The performance of Sonata in F major for ‘Cello and Piano, Op. 99 Allegro Vivace was truly an amazing experience and was my favorite piece of the concert. The piece started out fortissimo: violent and frantic. Within twenty measures it faded to pianissimo. During the entire piece, the dynamics ranged in and out of this spectrum. The tone color of the ‘cello was sharp, uplifting, and eclectic while the piano part’s tonal characteristics represented power, joy, grace, and sorrow. The pitch of the number varied from soprano to bass although it stayed mostly in the baritone register. The piece was in 3/4 time. There was some syncopation involved when the ‘cello would deviate from the beat set by the piano. During the piece, both the piano and ‘cello would imitate each other in a counterpuntal fashion. It seemed as though at times the ‘cello would command the piano and vice versa. The texture of the piece was homophonic of course but there was definetly some polyphonic parts to the piece as the two instruments imitated and responded to one another on the different themes. Overall I give this concert four and a half (out of five) stars. It would have been perfect if only the artists had added more passion to their work. They played the pieces beautifully but showed little outward emotion. This, I believe is crucial to any great performance and enhances the experience and emotion of the entire piece by getting the audience involved; making them not only see, but feel the passion that the composer expresses through his work. Where and…

The exposition starts with d minor, with a feeling of melancholy. The cello starts the main melody and then violin repeats the melody. The first part of the exposition starts from mm.1-mm.117. On mm.38 the piano plays an arppeggiated diminished seventh chord with the d pedal. This part sounds like drifting around and finally gets back again to the melody on mm.66. The transition starts from mm.84 to mm.118. During the transition, strings and the piano performed a technique of question and answer from mm.90 to the German six chord on mm.106. The second theme starts on mm.118-mm.186. The second theme is in A major. In comparison to the first theme, the second theme sounds smooth and cheerful. From mm.186 to mm.221 is the codetta. The codetta repeats the very first theme in a different way and leads the listeners to the development.…

The first piece was named “Overture from The Force of Destiny”, the second piece was “Bachianis Brasileiras No.5 - Aria”, and the third piece was “Mediatation from Thais”. Next, the fourth piece was “Hannah’s song”, the fifth piece was “Estudiantina”, and the sixth piece was “Caucasian Sketches No.1 from Procession of the Sardars”. Then, the seventh piece was “Danse Macabre Op.40”, the eighth piece was “Frantic Forest Frenzy” and the ninth piece was “Les Preludes”. Last, the tenth piece was “Perfect Music-Breaking the Spell”, the eleventh pieces was “Symphony No.5-First Movement” and the last piece was “Ode to joy from Symphony No.9-Fourth Movement”. For the visual effects on the concert, the hall lighting was bright before the start of the concert. After that, lighting only focused on the stages of the hall. According to chief conductor of the St Peterburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the hall design has incorporated the acoustical devices to improve the sound and music quality (Yuri, 2013). For the arrangement of the stage development, it is similar to the standard layout of orchestra, the string instrument at the first session which is nearest to the audience. Violin is the right most of the string instrument session, viola in the middle and cello was at the leftmost. Then, harp was at behind of violin and double bass was at behind of cello. Second session is woodwind instrument, third session is brass instrument, and the last session is percussion. (Think Quest, 2010).…
