The Key Differences between Canning Town and Richmond upon Thames
For any two of the following types of area, summarise the contrasts between them and explain the implications of these contrasts for social welfare:
Social welfare refers to the opportunities that people have to live in a free and safe environment with access to services and jobs. This may not be equally available in all areas. Concentrations of one age group, ethnic group or social class can help to develop a community where people are supportive of each other. It can also concentrate areas of poor housing, unemployment and lack of services such as school and health facilities which can lead to areas of deprivation. There are a number key differences between the inner city area of Canning town and the suburban area of Richmond upon Thames even though both housing areas are situated in London. Such differences include; housing type,ethnicity,age structure,wealth,employment and services which can be linked with one another, all of which contribute to the social welfare of people in these areas. A main difference is the housing type found in these two areas. Canning town comprises of 10,000 new homes funded by the Catch project have replaced the old high­rise tower blocks­ particularly family sized homes which are affordable for rent or purchase, however there is still a problem in Newham as many large families still need appropriate housing. Much of the existing housing has either been replaced or renovated for example new windows have been put in. However the housing in Richmond is extremely different with large Georgian and victorian houses occupy the roads leading away from the river up to Richmond Hill­ where some of London’s most expensive property can be found. Richmond upon Thames probably represent the best of London living, which all comes at a cost, house prices there in 2010 were some of the highest prices in London­ and therefore the UK.
