Daniel Burnham is the head architect in charge of building the entire fair. Throughout the entire book he is faced with many difficulties and challenges such as whether or not the fair will be completed on time. The entire country is counting on him to out due France and build something great.
At the time Chicago was called the 'Black city' because it was industrial and dirty but Daniel Burnham was making what they called the 'White City'. The author's purpose was to inform his audience about what had happened at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. He included the process of how the fair became the World's Fair and how it was built, but he also gave insight to the sick under story of Henry Holmes. His purpose was to show that the world was so blinded by the extravagance of the fair, they paid no attention to the serial killings that were happening just blocks away from the fair's grounds.
I did enjoy this book, it was very interesting. I think the book done a GREAT job on describing the topic and I definitely would recommend this book to a friend and to others because its very fascinating and talks about other events in history and other famous figures and also monuments.
