I was given an opportunity to shadow a session between a patient and a psychiatrist. The patient experienced a lot of trauma growing up such as child abuse, living in foster homes, and homelessness. The psychiatrist initially used psychotherapy to help cope with the trauma. After multiple sessions the patient advised the psychiatrist the negative thoughts, panic attacks, and anxiety would strike unexpectedly. After further review, the psychiatrist prescribed medication for the patient to help suppress mood change and PTSD. I learned ascertaining the cause of psychiatric illness is more than an intellectual pursuit, it can improve the lives of countless patients. I want to help those with mental illness transition into a lifestyle without the burden of anxiety or depression. As an aspiring psychiatrist, I want to do more than just listen. I want to use the power of education to teach patients healthy ways to cope with their issues and also use medicine as a unique addition to improve their mental…

To analyze the gender stereotypes through the female’s traits and male’s traits in OLX Indonesia television commercials “Household” version, as the main theory, the writer uses Simone de Beauvoir’s critical thinking about the construction of gender by the society in feminine’s point of view and how women become what society wants to be because of the social construction about femininity and masculinity. She asserted that, “One is not born but rather becomes, a woman” (Beauvoir 1953, 273). In her book “The Second Sex”, Beauvoir stated about women that actually become women as what society expect them to be because they are taught to do so; women should be like this and not should be like that. Moreover, it told about how men become the ‘Subject’…

It is with great pleasure that I was able to talk to five of the greatest psychiatric minds William James, John Dewey, Charles Darwin, G. Stanley Hall, and Leta Stetter Hollingsworth. These five psychiatrists contribute majorly to the field of psychology. I was blessed with the chance to be able to ask each of them a question. Allowing me to see these great thinkers in their element of greatness.…

The field of Mental Health has been an evolving process ever since its infancy. In the early stages of Mental Health, individuals who were deemed appropriate for mental health counseling were being labeled as "ill" and in need of serious and immediate treatment. While on the other hand, individuals who were not deemed appropriate for Mental Health were being considered leading a healthy and normal life (Smith & Robinson, 2011). The field of Mental Health can be traced back all the way to Paris, France. The founding father, Philippe Pinel had a firm foundation to humanize individuals in mental institutes by trying to get them to display a sense of being normal. During the late 1800 's, a traditionalist approach started to become increasingly popular where mental clients were being housed instead of focusing on the overall wellness and care of the patient. A little later on in the early 1900 's, a…
The television show revolved around the lives of psychiatrists, their friends, and the patients they cared for. Even though the show depicted fictional (yet realistic) situations, the scenarios involving the psychiatric patients opened my eyes to the everyday realities those living with mental illness may actual endure. This, accompanied by inspiration from my familial struggles and my experiences with Georgia Artists with DisAbilities, has motivated me to pursue a career as a psychiatrist in hopes of increasing knowledge on mental illness and helping to improve the lives of mentally ill people across the…

In the mid-1900s, the discovery of psychological and drug methods had a rapid succession as a form of treatment and created a decline of patients in asylums. Psychiatrists of this era worked in the asylums practicing “moral treatment” or “moral management”, a humane approach at quieting mental turmoil, this then replaced the often-cruel treatment that then prevailed. This treatment was also based on the belief that the environment was a vital role. Replacing shackles, chains and cement…
Though many may view themselves, as unique individuals, we are all part of a larger society, and the way we interact is a direct reflection of that society. Throughout history, discrimination, racism and ethnocentrism, are part of our world and directly impact services received in institutions where people are employed, including and not limited to the mental health provider (Burnett, Hamel, & Long, 2004). Cultural values and beliefs of mental health workers, filter through the same lens as other people of the mainstream population. According to Bandura and Walters (1963) role experience and social interaction support and aid in patterns of behavior created. Inevitably, it appears, the personal beliefs can impact how a person behaves in the…
The way I interact with my patients can change the dynamic of the milieu. Each psychiatric patient has to be treated like an individual. Having a depressed patient, a manic patient, and an actively psychotic patient on a psychiatric unit is no different than having a patient with a pacemaker, a valve replacement, and a bypass graft together on a telemetry unit. Different patients call for different interventions.…
