Starbucks Backward Vertical Integration
Starbuck is implementing a strategy of backward vertical integration, they direct purchase bean from coffee grower, and established company owned and operates roasting plants, warehousing and distribution facilities, and that it will able to ensure bean supply and receive it with a reasonable price. In case, Starbucks bought Evolution Fresh, which provide health juice to several retailer and company owned store, and then company built factory in California in 2013, in order to support the rollout of Evolution Fresh products into market.
Starbuck is also implementing forward integration through build company owned store that sell main of drink, food and coffee beans, appliance and accessories. In case, Starbucks were sales of coffee through owned 1325 retail store and joint ventures, and issue licensed stores that distribute Starbucks’ product in new channels. And then, they have sales of coffee through 10 West Coast supermarkets in US, and plan to expand 4000 grocery stores into mass market channels.

    Starbucks started as small coffee shop in a tourist area called Pikes Place Market in Seattle. The three unknown pioneer of Starbucks wanted to share their passion for brewed coffee and tea. During their first year in the business, they experimented with all sorts of coffee blend until they came up with their own flavor. Their business became an instant success using the word of mouth selling brewed coffee cup by cup. This is what inspired them to open a second store to target the wider market. By the early 1980’s, Starbucks expanded to four new stores in Seattle area. Since then, they became the largest retail company in the world. This coffee company grew from four Starbucks store to having currently 16,635 stores globally including 11,068 in the United States, 1000 stores in Canada, and more than 800 in Japan (Salomon 271). This amazing expansion can be attributed to Howard Shultz’s dedication to brewing coffee who bought the coffee’s trademark twenty five years ago. We source coffee from 30 countries we have a proprietary roasting process. We distribute to company owned stores, and finally serve the coffee. Others are resellers of commodity-based coffee”. The Starbucks buyers are regular costumers, hotels, hospitals, and airlines. Starbucks has 10% market share in the United State and 1% in the world. Starbucks’ competitors are Coffee Bean, Dunkin Donuts, and other small shops. There are some substitute products such as soft drinks, power drinks, and fresh juice. Costumers’ loyalty to their coffee brand is the biggest threats of new firms entering the industry.…
