St Mariano Giordano Analysis

Within Creative Arts Morgan Village Academy, a selected class was able to experience Irene Sfakianos’s lecturers. Because of this, the class was able to view the original artworks in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Where the students were able to fully appreciate the paintings and sculptures within art’s history. From my involvement within this field trip, I’ve seen paintings from Aelbert Cuyp, N.L. Peschier, Frans Snyders, and more. What brought to my attention the most is a painted canvas called “Saint Sebastian Cured by Saint Irene” done by Luca Giordano, very ironic that Sfakianos’s first name is the name of the female Saint. “Saint Sebastian Cured by Saint Irene” was made in Naple, Italy on 1655 with a dimension of 184.2 × 276.2 cm. This art style can draw the audience into participation. Once I saw this painting, my eyes could not stop analyzing the scene because of how it stirred my emotions. Amazement, sadness, horror, and curiosity all came over me. Thus making me choose this painting to write my analysis on.

My first glimpse came upon St. Sebastian’s pale skin but what made the painting intricate to me is the way St. Irene is holding the arrow that pierced Sebastian’s skin. Because of how Irene is carefully holding the arrow, I had the impression that she is holding a paintbrush. It took awhile for me to decipher that it is in fact an arrow and once I did, I grew more curious on the story behind this painting. First perceiving Irene to be an artist painting a possible sculptor became Irene helping a wounded Saint. Interesting how just the position of her hand can change someone’s consciousness. Within the dark brown and blue background, you see a lady wearing a brown cloth that the internet failed to identify. The structure and skin color of her face and the hunching of her back can inform the audience of her age. She seems to be consumed in darkness, which leads me to believe that she will be of inconvenience but the answer is
