No better tributes have been paid to any man on earth than to the teacher. East or West, everywhere they has been respected and worshipped. In the ancient India teacher was ranked next to God. In the West he is called, the "architect of nation", "maker of man", "the maker of history".
According to the Hindu point of views, the child receives second-birth at the hands of the teacher. The teacher plays the most prominent role in moulding the habits, tastes and the character of pupils. Teacher turns the child from animality to specialized human form. Books may teach a child, but the teacher educates.
Manu the ancient Indian sage says, "A teacher is the image of Brahma, a father is the image of Prajapati, a mother is the image of Earth
Qualities of a Teacher from different Points of View: Teacher is the most vital single factor in the system of Education. It is the teacher, who matters most as far as the quality of education is concerned. Really, the well- equipped teacher is a supreme factor in education. Teacher is the back-bone of society. Teacher is the nation builder. Teacher" shapes the children who are potential leaders of tomorrow.
Parents like the teachers to be highly sympathetic to the paying individual attention.
The higher educational authorities have their own whims. Judging teachers from examination results standpoint, they try to punish teachers with a view to setting them right. They want teachers to be meek and humble. They want also teachers to work under the worst conditions. The teachers should be resourceful even if they are asked to work in adverse conditions of poor house accommodation, ill-quipped classrooms even without a black-board The authorities should sincerely try their best to improve the lot of such teacher.
The educationists have given a long list of traits and qualities essential for a good teacher. Teacher is also a man; he is not a superhuman being.
Teachers must possess a devotion to profession with a strong sense of vocation; teachers should go for a true devotion to teaching. He must work in a missionary zeal. He must be somewhat prepared to sacrifice his self in the cause of education. The famous Sanskrit Poet of India, Kalidas says, ‘if the teachers’ scholarship is just earning bread, then he is no better than a shop-keeper selling knowledge”.
Once a teacher, always a teacher should be the motto. He must not oscillate and make teaching a stepping-stone to other vocations. A renowned educationist remarks, "The strength of school depends upon the permanency of its teachers to look teaching merely as a step-gap until they get something better, then it is the school that suffers". So teachers should consider teaching a calling and not a trade.

In the fast changing world,public teaching is also changing.As part of the changes the teachers role and authority in the classroom .
Together with the changes, new expectations appeared towards our schools. Nowadays schools need to teach their learners how to gain information and how to select and use them. This happens so quickly that students learn how to use the Internet together with their teachers. Parents are involved in decision-making so they take part in the life of the school. It is no longer enough to send the kids to school in the morning, pick them up in the afternoon. Parents have to a view of what is happening in the educational institution.
The changes that took place in schools have changed the roles of teachers, too. In the past teachers used to be the major source of knowledge, the leader and educator of their students' school life. Teachers would organise after-school activities. They used to be the authority in the class and often took over the role of parents. Nowadays, teachers provide information and show their students how to tackle them. Although they are still considered to be a kind of leader in the class, they can be thought of as facilitators in the learning process. They are supporters rather than educators and also advisors towards parents.
In the past teachers used to be the major source of knowledge ,the leader and educator of their students ,they used to be the authority in the class, but nowadays teachers need to teach their learners how to gain the information and how to select and use them,but the main problem is that the role of the teacher is changing day by day ,and teachers face many problems with the students and their families .The parents blame the teachers for the failure of their kids and for their bad behaviours sometimes . Do you think the teachers role has changed because of the technical changes in the world that makes a teacher not the only source of information or it's the modern educational methods. Teachers can provide the information and lead the students to the right way of gaining the information and applying it correctly,but students should also work hard to succeed and get high marks
At the end I would like to say few word and conclude my speech
“your teacher can open the door, but you must enter by your self”
I remember the first day of mine at school. The rain was heavily pouring and the wind was blowing even in the morning time. I was too nervous and a bit excited. On reaching the classroom, I chose the last row to be seated as I had no friends. After the class teacher entered the class, he placed me in the first bench and asked me to introduce myself. I really felt comfortable even in a completely new environment just because I liked the teacher as he was frank and polite to me. Teaching learning process involves a teacher and a student. It is very important for both of them to have a healthy relationship in order to carry out the teaching learning process smoothly. Teachers are known to be the second parents. Parents provide us moral education and teachers provide us rest of the knowledge necessary for living and knowing the world. The gurus of ancient era are now addressed by ‘sir’ or the last name. The child’s relationship with the teacher determines the grade and academics of the student. Teachers control the destiny of the students for more that two decades. Ultimately, the product comes out. The way the teacher has shaped the mind and creativity of the student then shows. Establishing a positive teacher student relationship helps to yield a beautiful environment in the classroom. A teacher is also a guide, a friend, a counsellor and also like a gardener who waters the tiny flowers called children.
If the teacher student relationship is to be maximally productive, must reflect certain attitudes and commitments of each to the other. First, the student must respect his or her teacher and hold him in the highest esteem. Even though this instruction may be uncomfortable and disconcerting at times, but a teacher always wants his student to do good.50 the student must believe that the teacher always has his or her best interests in mind. All the time, the teacher looks forward to improve his student and polish the creativity in the student. The student must commit himself or she to following the instruction with utmost discipline, just as a doctor’s orders must be followed precisely, since failure to do so could cause harm, so a teacher’s advices must be obeyed with equal sincerity. A teacher is the student’s path finder. When we need to move on or are stuck with something, teacher helps us find the way.335 Teacher is like a potter who craves mud into a fixed shape, and turns it into a pot. Teachers always stand by the students, to guide and support them. Since the time of Dronacharya( the teacher/guru of kauravas and pandavas in mahabharat), teaching learning process has been flourishing. But gurus were always kept in superior position and students below the teachers. A teacher who forgets his responsibility was also given the tag of a teacher. It is said that when Eklabya asked guru dronacharya to teach him archery, he refused and asked to learn it by him. When Aklabya learnt archery by listening to guru dronacharya’s training to the pandavas and kauravas and became perfect in it, guru dronacharya asked Aklalabya to cut his as thumb gurudakshina so that he would not be able to perform archery again.(Wikipedia) Teachers can be good, teachers can be bad, but most of the teachers are ideal people.
When I was in grade 8, I had a teacher named Dhurba Sharma. He was absolutely good looking, had attractive personality and a very friendly nature. He challenged the education system ofNepal. His teaching method was very different. We liked studying outside the class and he usually took us outside the class. He often took us to the historical sites and taught us about them as the course he taught was social studies. He formed groups among students and ask us to study in groups. This made us more attentive in class and gradually our grades in the subject also improved.
In the teenage years school becomes one of the most interesting places for the youth because you can make great friends there and you can learn how to deal with your own problems by your self. That is why the teacher should be student’s best friend. Professor’s acts should be an example for each student. In the school the student builds a pared of his character. Sometimes the teacher should talk about common problems and break the atmosphere of roiling, rolls and discipline, cause the life of a young man isn’t just school lessons. This is the most difficult period of young man’s life.( Biljana Kotevska). The teacher should befriend the students and be a perfect guide to the students. When a child is born, he learns to speak, gradually he starts to walk and learning and understanding life. In the course of time, the same child reaches maturity. If he is in the hands of an experienced and an ideal teacher, the child turns out to be a successful person. We can take an example of the street children and the children who go to schools.
The pattern and culture of teaching and learning process has been changing. In ancient times, teachers used to be teaching in their ashrams and the students would have to make the teachers by working hard at the ashram. The students used to collect firewoods, fodder for the cattles, clean the house and cook food for the gurus. Gradually this system changed and now formal education has been in trend. Students pay fees instead of working at guru’s ashram and study in the classrooms. Also, with the change in this pattern of teaching, students have failed to respect teachers like the students years ago used to. The role of a teacher was different before, but now, since the world has changed a lot, and there is a lot other means for people to receive information like media, internet etc. Students today are more informed then before, and so the teachers are more of a facilitator there. There is no such charm in the relationship of the teacher and student like before. Teachers teach and students learn, there is no intimacy between the teachers and students. When this becomes worst, and there is a huge communication gap between the teacher and the student, then there occurs problem in the relationship between them. The actual teacher-student relationship however changes during the career. On average there is a significant increase in dominant behaviour of teachers during the first decade of their career: a movement towards the ideal teacher-student relationship. After this period dominance stabilises. On average there is no change in co-operative behaviour. There is no shift towards the ideal as experience grows.( Mieke Brekelmans).
These days, we can hear news about the teachers harassing the students too. The teacher – student relationship is pure like water. These kinds of incidents make the relation weaker. There are lots of cases where we find female students being harassed by the male teachers. Especially in the third world countries, female students are more prone to the harassments. Lord Brahma in Hinduism is known as a teacher. A teacher is compared to a very sacred and pure figure/ god in Hinduism.
A teacher if imposes rules and discipline to the students, the student fails to develop his creativity. He learns that in life you don’t do anything unless you’re bullied and conned into doing it. He learns to get bored even with a small piece of work . ( John Holt) . At times we hear news about students committing suicide because of the marks and grades issues. When a student takes the exam well but doesn’t get the expected marks due to the personal problem teacher has with the student, some of the teachers intentionally don’t want the students to get the marks with flying colours. Due to the punishments given by teachers to the students, the students may be badly affected. The young mind and psychology of the children might get disturbed. We come across numerous news about these issues nowadays. There are many laws against this but only few are being implemented. The teacher-student relationship is a must for quality education. This means that the teacher does not necessarily have to feel favourably of the student and neither does the student have to think same for the teacher, but a common language is required.. And both sides should feel comfortably about trust and intimacy in the teacher student relationship. Both sides should be aware of the others’ feelings and there should be respect for each others in the heart. Teachers are the second parents, so students must put the teachers’ instructions in practice as they would always want their students to do well and be successful in life. And teachers have certain responsibility towards the students, as they are the path leaders; they are to lead the students towards the right way in a right manner. For this, there must be a charm and positive relationship between the teacher and the student.

Challenges Before Teacher Education in Changing Scenario

“Teacher education may assume a leadership role in the transformation of education or be left behind in a swirl of rapid technological change.” UNISCO-2002

Entering into the 21st century does not mean a simple shift of calendar year. Presently we are in the KNOWLEDGE-ERA supported by high and low technology. Teacher-Education being an integral part of the whole education system is considered to be the hub of the entire education because it is believed that as is the B.Ed., so will be the secondary and higher secondary education. The Teacher- Education programme differs from other educational programmes in the sense that it trains the student teachers for a profession. .A teacher reshapes the life of thousands of youth during his tenure. Any lacunae in the preparation of these individuals would cost the country very dearly over a very long period of time
Social, economical and technological changes of the past decades have made education and training more crucial resource than ever. Yet teacher- education aims at providing opportunities to their students with necessary knowledge, skills and value system for evolving market places, common living environment and to prepare good citizens for lifelong learning.
With increasing use of technology and multimedia technology, the fate of today is shaped not in the classroom but more outside the classroom and the definition of the teacher has changed considerably. Advancing technology and changing scenario has both PULL and PUSH impacts on trends in flexible education. The sorry state of affairs is that our education sector has not been immune to the impact of advancement in information and communication technology.
Teachers in our government schools are playing multifarious roles besides classroom teaching .On one hand we pressurize introduction of ICT in the schools but simultaneously on the other hand teachers have been technically trained on ritual..
