Samsung Electronics Company: Global Marketing Operations
Samsung Electronics Company, created in 1969, was first considered as a low-cost third-tier commodity brand with a little product differentiation. By exploring marketing strategies, market research and analysis, Samsung has easily change into a major player in the electronic products and home appliances market. The company has climbed up the rank in the past decade and was in 2003 at the 25th position of the world’s most valuable brand. The goal is now to reach the top 10 by 2005. For that, the brand needs to achieve high level of awareness and to become a truly preferred brand.
We will see thought this document what are the ingredients of SEC’s corporate turnaround strategy, which are the individual actions taken by Samsung to build a strong brand and finally determined if Samsung can pass Sony and become a top ten global brand.
There were two major ingredients to Samsung corporate turnaround strategy. The first one is when the chairman, Kun Hee Lee, launched the “new management initiative”, which set out to remake Samsung as a global business leader. Throughout the 1990s, Lee demanded the rethinking of key fundamentals and set the stage for long-term commitment to investment in innovative, premium products and brand value. For that, Samsung viewed vertical integration and investment in manufacturing facilities and research and development as a source of flexibility and control over the entire product process. Samsung invested in many different factories and was also flexible in its choice of plant locations to keep cost low. On the other hand, Samsung offer the possibility to customized some products and as a result Samsung’s average prices were 17% above industry level.
The second ingredient was when Samsung transitioned from analogue to a digital technology manufacturer. Its 17 000 scientists, engineers and designers were engaged and thanks to the speedier decision-making processes Samsung could refresh its product line twice as often. The investment in

    Samsung, in wanting to reposition itself as a high value added preferred products provider from a value, or cheap OEM products provider, faced many challenges. A big challenge for Samsung was that the Samsung brand was at different stages of development in different country markets – so while in some markets the Samsung brand had high brand recognition and loyalty, in some the brand had low awareness. This caused management of different regional and product groups to disagree as to how much local adaptation of marketing and global brand-building communication strategies were necessary. Internally the managers could not conceptualize the value that global branding and marketing could make for their brand and ultimately their sectors. There was no consistent brand message for Samsung but rather 55 different marketing plans and 20 different slogans. Wanting to compete in the global league with global sectors but having 20 different slogans meant no consistent brand message or recognition for the Samsung umbrella. Additionally Samsung needed to change consumers’ perception of them being a low-cost value-added provider to one that had product leadership and innovation. To reposition the brand, Samsung needed to unify it’s regional and product segments to have a more global presence and thus increase brand awareness for the Samsung brand itself. Additionally, managers had to be incentivized and persuaded into believing that money spent on advertising could be better for them as a whole than money on R&D and that customers don’t always respond to good products but need to be told why Samsung products ought to be their first choice – managers that were short-sighted, or focused on their specific product or region had to, were made to recognize that global marketing would allow for the long-run success of the brand and in tern their respective segments.
