Safety Director

Sir, Ma’am, Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your safety director. Your company has an impeccable record, over the past 25 years, however one of Safety Management Systems top five safety principles states “Familiarity and prolonged exposure without a mishaps leads to a loss of appreciation of risk” this in itself leads to complacency and can lead to mishaps. My job is to make sure our company has another 25 years without an incident and that we continue on this streak by streamlining some of our processes to not only increase safety, but reduce waist, thereby increasing productivity and our bottom line. The most effective way to achieve this is by having an effective Safety Management System that everyone in the organization is familiar with.

For example: In maintenance units they must understand the lines between Flight Operations, Director of Maintenance, Safety Officer, and Quality Assurance. All have different objectives but must align to prevent safety mishaps. As a Manager you are accountable and responsible for safety within your area of responsibility. Quality assurance is there for investigations and to enforce standards and safety. So how do organizations establish an effective safety program? According to the United States department of labor (2017) an effective safety program consists of the following. Assign responsibilities to managers, supervisors and employees. Inspect regularly and control hazards, orient and train all employees to eliminate hazards. Safety is not a one person job the entire organization needs to be on the same page. I cannot do this my self, but I can help identify key personnel, establish an effective program and build a team to enforce your policies to ensure we are still heading in a positive
