Reasons For the failure of disarmament after WW1
“Disarmament failed mainly due to the role of America .” Do you agree ? I agree that disarmament failed mainly due to the role of America . One of the aims of the
League Of Nations (LON) was to promote disarmament to ensure world peace. Unfortunately
, the US did not join the LON due to its policy of isolationism . This was a big blow to the
League which was deprived of the strongest country at that point of time . Thus without US , the league was unable to carry out their economic sanctions successfully. In addition , it had no amy to carry out military sanctions . Thus although the LON advocated collective security, most nations were unwilling to put their national security under the LON . In fact , Britain and
France saw the LON as a platform to discuss things and did not take things seriously
.Therefore the countries had no faith in disarmament and it failed.
However there are other reasons for the failure of disarmament . selfish nations that seek to protect their own individual security also led to the failure of disarmament . Britain and France had a huge empire to defend and thus could not afford to disarm , they also felt threatened by communist Russia and were wary of Germany and italy becoming a potential threat in
Europe.Japan also needed to arm herself to defend against European land grabbing in
Asia­Pacific .
Another reason for the failure of disarmament is that ambitious and aggressive nations like
Japan , Italy were unwilling to disarm because of their desire to expand their empire and include more territoires for various reasons Germany felt that the treaty of versailles had unfairly stripped her of much german land and violated WIlson’s principle of self ­ determination. Hence , they were determine to regain these territories populated by germans and german speaking people in order to restore national pride. As for Japan,she embarked on a policy of aggression due to economic problems such as the lack of raw materials and
