For example, we had to read “Death by Landscape.” The entire story was about a couple of girls out in nature at a summer camp. At the end of the story one of the girls had disappeared in the woods when all of the campers had gone on a canoe trip. They never see the girl again and there is some kind of mystery along with what had happened to the girl that no one seems to find out. This story had both themes I mentioned above that Canadians normally talk about throughout their stories. I say that they have both themes because throughout the story they are in nature at a summer camp, and at the end of a cane trip that they take with the summer camp, a girl goes missing and is never seen again demonstrating the death theme. “Canadian literary and popular culture has always been influenced by the presence (and often threat) of external ‘other’” (Holman and Thacker, p. 128). With that being said, it truly shows that Canadians identify their environment to be more or less survival of the fittest. “Canadian literature often focuses on physical survival against hostile elements” (Lecture 21, slide 5). The identity of Canada is shown in the short story “As Birds Bring Forth the Sun.” This story shows more or less the survival part of how Canadians identify with their environment. The story shows the hostility of animals in the wild and the miscommunication among the father and the pup that the father had nurtured earlier in the story. I always see in the stories that I have read, some kind of death. It gives the identity of Canadians environment and nature a sense of danger and fear of the
