Policy Presentation Reflection

Writing a policy presentation speech was a challenge. Before this semester most of the speeches I have written have been either informative speeches or speeches created for marketing competitions. The biggest challenge that I faced while writing this speech was finding way to connect to my audience. I used narrative in order to bring the audience into the problems I was discussing, but when I was not using narrative my voice took on a practiced tone and I lost my audience again. If I were to redo this assignment I would add more elements to my speech that could draw the audience in. I would enhance my visual aid by adding more pictures to my presentation. The other students in the class gave their speeches in front of a group, but due to my illness I gave the presentation to just the instructor. Some students may have preferred to give the presentation one on one but personally I give better speeches when there is a group of people watching. My illness also contributed to how I went about preparing the speech. I usually do not practice my speeches more than a couple times before I present, as I believe this allows me to take on a more relaxed tone. However I practiced this policy presentations numerous times due to my nerves about falling behind the rest of the class. Overall I think I chose a great subject for the speech, and I did a good job preparing. I do not think that my presentation went as well as it could have. If I were to revisit writing this speech I would not write the whole speech out, and I would only write out my quotes and talking points. I believe this would have allowed my speech to have a more conversational tone to my presentation, and it would have made it easier to connect with my audience. I thought creating a policy speech for this class was a good experience, and it helped me develop my persuasion
