This article discusses nursing in the United States and relates the ideology versus other cultures. The author states “The values of nursing in the States are, for example, embedded in the values of the U.S. American culture with its emphasis on self-reliance and individualism” (Ludwick, R., Silva, M.C., August 14, 2000), but notes that many cultures do not share our country’s sense of individualism and that the majority of these cultures have a sense of loyalty and identity to their group rather than to themselves, and these values not only relate to their family and community, but often to their health care needs as well. The conflict arises in the healthcare setting when the nurse attempts to supersede the cultural values and force their own beliefs onto the individual seeking medical care.…

Doane and Varcoe stress the importance that nursing has to do with cultures and the context, and to look beyond the obvious. To see that culture is more than population groups and not necessarily pertaining to race, ethnicity or one’s nationality but as always dynamic and changing (Doane, G.H., Varcoe, 2015). When applying context and culture relationally in nursing practice, nurses are reminded that people are situated and constituted within multiple contexts so that two individuals cannot be lumped together as the same culture (Doane, G.H., Varcoe, 2015). Furthermore, one should be careful to avoid labelling and imposing one’s own interpretations as there are many factors…

I would not advise Sarah to take the position offered due to the fact that there are more than one category within the advanced practice nursing field. The role of nurse practitioner and family nurse practioners (FNP) hold their own category within the APN field and although she has passed her board exam and is certified in working as an APN, she does not have any experience in family medicine and geriatric care on paper (McClelland, 2014) . Over time, Sarah can gain exposure in the care of adult medicine and geriatrics, however to be thrown into the mix with little to know experience can have a negative impact on her patients and the medical practice that she is working for. Additionally, it is recommended that she exercise medical practice…

Approximately 20% of the United States “Baby Boomer’s” will be over the age of 65 years old. In 2013 there was a total of 44.7 million adults aged 65 and older in the US. Maryland’s population is approximately 6.5 million with 22% the population at age 65 and older by 2030 ("Administration on Aging," 2014, p. 10). If Naquin would quit or get laid off tomorrow, she can work almost anywhere in her field since she is a family nurse practitioner, and they will train her on the job. Another option is she could go back to get her Doctorate’s degree. With a Doctorate’s degree, she could teach in her field and there are some benefits as well such as a pay raise. The only job that can be considered “similar” would be a physician’s assistant. It requires a little more schooling, but these two jobs basically have the same requirements, job duties, and there is not much different in pay. The only liability her job contains is the possibility of a lawsuit. She did explain that there is job growth in her field. When the Affordable Care Act comes/came into effect,…

Culture is not something that is preprogrammed within us; it’s something that is learned through time. This becomes essential when trying function within a culturally different belief system than our own. For instance, with nursing as my chosen path of concentration, being aware of an individual’s culture differences may help me understand their beliefs, attitudes, customs, and behaviors in different scenarios. This is important in nursing because I am expected to be an advocate for the patient. Every nurse is taught to treat their patients with respect and dignity. A nurse may encounter various social norms among different groups while practicing.…

Cultural competency is an essential part of nursing. Catering to the population of the United States as a nurse, one must embrace the cultures of others to provide competent care that will address the needs of the patient in a holistic manner. Beliefs of health management and care differ for all cultures. Being familiar with all backgrounds and cultures is a key factor in providing culturally appropriate care for patients. Illness and the care for illness and disease is viewed differently from culture to culture. The ability to understand and respect the differences among all cultures needs to be utilized by all healthcare providers. Since the perception of illness and disease and their causes varies by culture, these individual preferences affect the approaches to health care. Culture also influences how people seek health care and how they behave toward health care providers (Cultural Diversity, 2012). As health care providers we must learn how to take the proper steps in assessing cultural backgrounds of patients. Asking the appropriate questions can help create a treatment plan that will provide quality care that tends to the patients cultural beliefs as well.…

As a health care provider, I believe that the core of nursing embodies the integration of abstract nursing knowledge, behavioral and natural science, the humanities, and the arts. All of these attributes, plus humanity toward other people, help shape compassionate, respectful behavior, and effective nursing care. My goal in providing nursing care is to use my comprehension, competencies and skills to provide care to patients to enhance physical condition, comfort and quality of life. The unique values and beliefs that differentiate and define people all impact the ways people experience and relate to one another. One huge challenge in the nursing field is how to integrate properly our own values and beliefs into professional practice. “Professional values are standards for actions accepted by the practitioner and professional group that provide a framework influencing the behavior of the group” (Kubsch, Hansen, & Huyser-Eatwell, 2008, p. 1). Identifying the values which are most important will significantly influence an individual’s nursing performance.…

“Preservation of one’s own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures”-Cesar Chavez (n.d). This is the concept that we have learned in the Intercultural Health Issues subject. Being nurses we should respect each other’s culture and should provide culturally sensitive care. Culture is a set of beliefs, customs, arts, values, and behaviours shared by a group of people. Studying culture is important because it helps to avoid any unsatisfactory outcomes and to provide culturally sensitive care. It is also significant to avoid stereotyping and essentialism. Studying this subject has brought many new changes in my personality and has increased my knowledge about Canadian culture and nursing in Canada to a great extent. This…
