There are a range of theories of leadership and management. Theories of leadership I looked at included the ‘Trait theory’ – this theory suggests that people are born with a range of traits (qualities or attributes), and that some of these traits are ideally suited to leadership. Individuals who make good leaders would have particular traits of being confident, organised, decisive, ambitious, dependable and trustworthy, intelligent, adaptable with good people skills. I believe we are all born with certain traits and are drawn to jobs and tasks that suit our personalities best. These are ideal traits for a leader to guide a staff team.…

Some look at leadership as the ability to lead. I agree 100% with leadership being the ability to lead, but in order to have the ability to lead you have to have more. There has to be a process of social leadership in which a person is able to aid and support others in their accomplishment when it comes to a specific task; this is a process of social influence on someone. Paying attention to how leaders carry themselves and interact with others socially giving guidance and being helpful. Leadership is also organizing a group or team of people to achieve a common goal and sometimes the leader may not have formal authority, but they are leading/guiding the group or team in accomplishing the goal.…

To me, leadership is leading by example. My years in high school have shown me that the person who builds people up, and shows kindness is more of a leader than someone who commands and controls people. I strive to be this kind, caring person who others can look up to. As I grow older, I hope that by doing the right things, I can inspire others to do the same.…

In my opinion, leadership is more than just someone who can enlist the aid of others to accomplish a specific task. It is a characteristic and a lifestyle of a person. True leadership is not displayed on days we feel like it. It is a constant display of ones actions to accomplish tasks and set an example for others to emulate. A leader is someone who can be turned to in the absence of knowledge or direction and will either have the answer or know where to get the answer.…

Being a leader is a real skill that requires time, commitment, thought and dedication. According to Pearson (2015), “Leaders are people with the ability to rule, guide, or inspire others to think or act as they recommend” (p. 2489). My personal definition of leadership is the ability to inspire and motivate others to act towards a common purpose, through one’s personal words and actions. I have been very lucky to have many great leaders that have cared for me and my professional development throughout my life and career. Since graduating boot camp, and at every unit since, I have been exposed to both good and bad methods of leadership. Some people seem to rely strictly on their positional power to accomplish tasks and give orders from a place of authority. Others use a combination of authority and other personal strengths such as inspiration, motivation and humor.…
