Open and Distance Learning is an alternative platform for people who want to pursue their tertiary education. This is especially true in the case of working professionals who wish to learn while on their job.
However, it has always been a challenge to cope with learning verifying degrees of skills as they lack face to face interaction when compared to traditional learners. The main challenge of distance learning is that direct real-time feedback from the students or teachers is not possible.
Therefore, as an open and distance learner, achieving consistent excellent academic performance is the key to students’ success at university. To achieve that, one must have good understanding on excellent study skills and information literacy. It is also requires clear objectives, motivation, planning, self discipline, self confidence, good study habits and a positive attitude.
By learning an excellent study skills and information literacy, it will help to elevate student closer to success.
According to Schumaker and Sheldon (1985), “study skills that provided to open and distance learner (ODL) are to equip them with the necessary techniques, principles and knowledge to function efficiently as an ODL Lerner which enable a student to learn to solve problems and complete tasks independently” (in Gordon, 1994).
Whilst the Information Literacy defines as the ability to know when there is a need for information, to be able to identify, locate, evaluate and effectively use that information for the issue or problem at hand. It is a central to the learning process and forms the foundation of lifelong learning.
Therefore, excellent study skills and information literacy because somewhat it can help us in overcoming challenge as online student.
To ensure excellent study skills and information literacy skills are properly acquired, student need to posses the following tips and strategies.
Important Skills for Excellent Studies And Information Literacy
There are four elements that can help in achieving excellent study skills and information literacy skills for open and distance learner:
1. Develop a time management strategies
2. Effective and appropriate communication skills
3. Make the most of online discussion
4. Make connections with fellow students
1. Develop a time-management strategy.
According to Pisano, E.D. Time management 101, realistic time management and organization plans can improve productivity and the quality of life. However, these skills can be difficult to develop and maintain. The key elements of time management are goals, organization, delegation, and relaxation.
As an open and distance learner, the self-discipline required to devote adequate time to class in courses that might not have regularly scheduled times to meet synchronously online or in person. A key difference between in-person and online learning is the independence and ability to participate in the online class at a time convenient to the student. This also presents a potential problem, as procrastination could cause a student to fall behind in the online course.
Most students found that establishing their own schedules for class time helped them 3
ensure enough time for class participation. Setting and staying to specific study days was one factor that worked for student. Therefore you must have your study calendar to make a plan and time for our study.
Developing a schedule that designates specific times to log in to and participate in class and to carry out other course-related activities such as reading and doing research promotes a student's success as an online learner. Students identified the most helpful time-management strategies as setting a schedule for study time (78.9 percent) and devoting time daily to the course (31.6 percent).
