Management and leadership are equally important in the successful delivery of health and social care services, in some aspects the roles are very similar, however they do require different skill sets, outlooks and behaviours.
Management is a process of managing the activities of the organisation.
Leadership is influencing and encouraging a team toward a shared goal.
Managers require some leadership skills in order to encourage service delivery to have the intended outcome and leaders need the organisational skills of a manager in order to effectively lead a team. Therefore, both roles are intrinsically linked to one another and in practice complement one another.

Identifying areas of improvement, planning, resourcing, implementing and monitoring service delivery outcomes is an essential part of management tasks. A firm focus is placed on ensuring the service complies with relevant legislation and guidelines relating to health and safety and safeguarding to protect service users and staff from any form of abuse, accident or injury.
Implementation of strategies for the development of the service in response to front line needs and changes in the operating environment are also important factors in managing a service within the health and social care sector. Another important factor is ensuring policies and procedures are relevant, up to date and being followed accordingly. Promoting personal and professional development of employees in order to continuously improve the quality of work and stimulate their individual and collective growth.
