Investigating Osmosis
Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules across a semi-permeable membrane. Diffusion is the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration, to an area of low concentration. So, Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from an area where there are lots of water molecules to an area where there are few water molecules.

Our aim is to find the concentration of dissolved substances in the cells of a potato using Osmosis.

I predict that the potato in the higher concentration of salt solution will lose an increasingly high amount of weight. I think this because the higher the concentration in salt, the more water particles will move through the potato cell's semi-permeable membranes to try and balance the salt concentration. For example, if you placed a larger piece of potato into a beaker of an almost 100% salt solution; the potato would completely shrivel up because it would lose all of the water molecules to the area of high concentration during Osmosis.

The range of different concentrations of salt and water solutions we are intending to use in order to find the concentrations of dissolved substances in the cells of a potato are:

· 0% (water)
· 0.5%
· 1.0%
· 1.5%
· 2.0%
· 2.5%
· 3.0%

The equipment that we are going to use for this experiment are:
· Seven test tubes
· A test tube holder
· Weighing scales
· Knife
· Clingfilm
· Pins
· A potato

Firstly, we will cut out 21 small pieces of potato all in the same size. We will then put the different concentrations of salt water into seven different test tubes; about a quarter of the test tube will be filled, just enough to cover three pieces of the potato. Next, one piece of potato will be weighed (and this weight will be recorded in a table) and placed in the 0% salt concentration test tube. A second piece will be weighed and recorded, then we will place a pin through the middle, then it will be put into the same test tube. A third piece will be weighed and recorded, and then we

The aim of this experiment was to test the effect of surface area on osmosis and the effect of solute concentration on osmosis. To test this aim to hypotheses were devised. 1) If potato pieces are immersed in various salt solutions, then the pieces with the greatest surface area to volume ratio will experience the greatest weight change, because more water can move by osmosis across the potato cell’s semi permeable membrane. 2) If potato pieces are immersed in various salt solutions, then the pieces immersed in the most concentrated solution will experience he greatest weight change, because more water must pass across the potato cells semi permeable membrane by osmosis to achieve an equilibrium. The results from testing these hypotheses did not support either and were shown to be flawed because they did not reflect the theories of osmosis relating to surface area to volume ration and salt concentration.…

The relative osmotic concentration was determined by measuring the percent change in mass of the potato tissues. Change in mass was measured of six solutions, each containing different levels of concentration (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5). The percent change in mass decreased as sucrose concentration increased, therefore, relative osmotic concentration also decreased as sucrose concentration increased. However, the osmotic concentration of 0.2 M sucrose solution was relatively greater than that of 0.1 M sucrose solution. In sucrose concentration 0.5 M, the osmotic concentration decreased slightly from that of 0.4, but significantly from those of all other sucrose concentrations. The osmotic concentrations were greater than zero in sucrose solutions of 0, 0.1, and 0.2 M; these cells were hypertonic, meaning the solutions had more solute. The osmotic concentrations were less than zero in sucrose solutions of 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 M; these cells were hypotonic, meaning the solutions had less solute. Osmotic concentration decreased as sucrose concentration increased and cells became more concentrated.…

The purpose of the lab was to investigate osmosis, which was successfully achieved because there was a change in the potato’s mass which was due to the net movement of water either into the potato cells or out of the potato cells. In the 0.400M solution, the potato decreased in mass, this was due to the reason that the solution was hypertonic. There was a higher concentration of solute and lower concentration of water in the solution than there was in the potato cells. This led the water to travel down its concentration gradient, which was from a higher concentration (in the cell) to a lower concentration (in the solution), which meant the potato cells lost water, therefore the potato lost mass. The 0.300M solution was also a hypertonic solution. The only difference is that the concentration of solute was lower than…

We started the lab by cutting the potato core length (44 mm). Each potato core are placed in test tubes. The test tubes have different salt concentration, test tube 1 has 0% salt concentration, test tube 2 has 0.625% salt concentration, test tube 3 has 1.25% salt concentration, test tube 4 has 2.5% salt concentration and test tube 5 has 5% salt concentration. The next day, we remove the potato core from the test tubes and measure their size. In test tube 1 with a 0% salt concentration, the potato core length after is 44 mm, the change in potato core length is 4 mm so the potato is hypertonic to that solution. In test tube 2 with a 0.625% salt concentration, the potato core length after is 42 mm, the change in potato length is 2 mm so the potato is hypertonic to that solution. In test tube 3 with a 1.25% salt concentration, the potato core length after is 39 mm, the change in potato length is -1 mm so the potato is…

The purpose of this investigation is to see if the concentration of Sodium chloride (NaCl) solution will affect the mass of the potato cylinder hence the rate of osmosis. This can be done by placing 5, identical in length (3cm) but different in weight, tubes of potato in 5 different beakers. Each containing an altered NaCl concentration. The concentrations used in this experiment were, 0%, 2%, 10%, 15%, and 26%. Potatoes were weighed prior to immersion into these solutions then after 15 minutes in solution were reweighed so that percentage mass change could be calculated. The hypothesis stated “when the concentration of NaCl is higher, osmosis will occur more readily causing the potato to decrease in percentage mass”. The results were recorded onto a table and then graphed. The patterns of our results were great besides for an odd random error. The results illustrated that as the concentration of NaCl solution increased the percentage mass of the potato cylinder decreased. All members who participated in conducting the experiment worked collaboratively and followed correct safety procedures. Several groups conducted the experiment and results from each group were collaborated and an average was calculated to ensure the results obtained were reliable. It was concluded from the results of the experiment as the concentration of NaCl solution increased outside the potato cylinder the percentage mass of the potato decreased.…

Solutions consist of solutes dissolved in a solvent. In all living organisms there are many different types of solutes including salts and sugars. The major solvent is water. There are different concentrations of solutes in various regions of an organism, including differences between the inside and the outside of the cell. Living organisms tend towards balance with their environment. Cells achieve this through diffusion. This is the random movement of solutes from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration. Osmosis is a special case of diffusion. Osmosis is the movement of water through a selectively permeable membrane. During osmosis, water molecules diffuse through the membrane from a region of higher water potential to lower water potential until equilibrium is reached. (1) In this lab, the idea was to see how the mass changed as osmosis occurred and water flowed into or out of the potato.…

My group and I conducted the experiment that estimates osmolarity by change in weight of potato tubers, this was conducted in order to explore the process of diffusion and osmosis and more importantly to investigate the question of “Does different concentrations of sucrose solutions have an effect on the final weight for the potato tubers?” In this experiment we estimated the osmolarity of potato tuber cores by submersing different potato cores into sucrose solutions of 0.0-0.6M, and weighing the potato. The results showed the weight of the potato tubers had the highest percent change in weight meaning that they weighed more than the initial weight in sucrose solutions from 0.0-0.3M; it also showed that sucrose concentrations from 0.4-0.6M the weight of the potato tubers decreased. My group and I concluded that the osmolarity of the potato was about 0.4M since the weight of the potato decreased by about -1.3%, which was the closest value to the initial weight of the potato tuber. We also found that the potato was hypertonic to sucrose solutions of 0.0-0.3M and hypotonic to 0.5-0.6M.…

We came up with objective of this laboratory to determine if the salt in the water has an effect on the potato cells. Demonstrate diffusion across a semi-permeable membrane and measure the effect of concentration in the process . Differentiate between hypotonic, isotonic and hypertonic environment. Hypotonic is a condition in which the environment has a higher solute concentration than inside animal or plant cell. Isotonic is equal concentration that has net flow of water a cross permeable membrane. We will compare salt water to fresh water so we can see if there is an effect caused by the salt in the water. The procedures we trimmed the potato slice so that they all have sides. We cut our potato to equal pieces. We wanted to make four slice of potato in same size. We also measured the size of potato so that we can determine each effect of water and…

Introduction: Osmosis is the spontaneous net movement of solvent molecules through a partially permeable membrane into a region of higher solute concentration in the presence of water. An isotonic solution is one in which the concentration of solutes is the same inside the cell as outside the cell (STAYS THE SAME). A hypotonic solution will have a lower concentration of solutes than the cell (SWELLS). A hypertonic solution will have a higher concentration of solutes than the cell and will have a higher osmotic pressure outside the cell than inside the cell. (SHRINKS) The objective of this experiment was to study the effects of one concentrated solution (with different percentages of solute) on white and sweet potatoes. If a .015 white potato is placed in solution with 50% sugar, then it will shrink! (Hypotonic)…
