I have been raised by parents that believe in my potential to create positive change in the world, and that cultivate my desire to help people on a global level. My upbringing was the genesis of my ambition, but the growth of my specific interest in political science stems from my experience as a translator in Honduras. Until then, I was I didn’t realize how much power one’s voice carries. Without the power to speak out, people are defenseless, and as Euripides described, “It is slavery, not to speak one’s thoughts”. The people of rural Honduras are ruthlessly exploited by the few sources employment. These employers, cognizant of their leverage, set their wages so low that their workers cannot afford to leave the countryside or get a higher education. With no aid from their government, the rural Hondurans fall into a virtually inescapable and corporately-systemized poverty…

Infectious and neglected diseases kill and weaken millions in the poorest and vulnerable population each year. Some of the health issues stem from not being able to tackle the poverty and poor health and eventually worsens over time. “In a healthy community leaders will resolve today and tomorrows public health issues but to do so there has to be change. # 1Because the poor can not get their basic needs for life, they cannot improve their well-being; therefore, our society as a whole cannot efficiently move in new directions. Studies by the International Center for Eradicating Poverty show that in third world countries the primary cause of poverty stems from the effects of natural disasters, the lack of uniform infrastructure, corruption, centralized government power, lack of knowledge, employment skills, education and resources.…

The city of San Pedro Sula has been crime stricken and run by gangs for several years causing many people to struggle for survival. During your brief discussion in class about the economic pearl and hardships of Honduras, it intrigued me to further look into the issue. After watching “The Devil’s Miner” and do some additional research I have picked two issues that come along with poverty in Latin America. The first issue that I believe is important is that many individuals go to bed hungry and children are not being fed properly. Although the number of malnurshinoshed individuals has decreased by a lot in the past couple of decades, there is still a huge number of people that are not getting the appropriate nutrients. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the number of undernourished people has decreased from 59 million in 1990 to 47 million in 2013. Latin American and the Caribbean are working on ending hunger. In the movie “The Devil’s Miner,” the family has to pick between using the money that is…

Tin shacks, worn shoes, and working in fields is the normality for a majority of Guatemalans. An estimated 75% of the country of Guatemala lives below the poverty line and upon first glance, one will not question this high statistic. In 2013 I traveled to Guatemala on a mission trip and have been back every summer since. Before my first trip I had been told that there was extreme poverty but my version of poverty at the time was a small house, beat up car, and maybe not showering every day. Little did I know that my version of poverty would sound like a luxury to most people I would come in contact with. Many days we spent our time in the villages. We built houses and stoves, played with the school kids, and more than anything we got a whole…

In 2011-2013 I had the chance to live in the Northern region of Honduras. Now, every opportunity that presents itself, I talk about the shimmering oceans, diverse culture, and stunning landscapes of Honduras that I saw firsthand. Upon hearing my testimony, many either ask where Honduras stands on a map or if it truly is as dangerous as they have heard. I strongly feel that the best way to discover the truth of this amazing land is visiting its stunning oceans and forests. One location that should be on every visitor’s list is the Pico Bonito Lodge, the only hotel tucked in the 219 square miles of national reserve. The lodge provides first hand experiences for visitors not only educate and enrich their lives, but also…

President Juan Orlando Hernández, during his first campaign promised to do “whatever he needed to do” to confront these challenges. Among the many pledges in his governance plan, the so-called “Vida Mejor” plan, he committed to continuing endorsing the decentralization process. Yet, upon taking office, the President seems to have changed his priorities, and as people interviewed for this evaluation reported, “placed the decentralization agenda on the backburner.” As many of his detractors fear, his promise to do whatever he needs to do to improve the security situation and alleviate poverty might include re-centralizing power in the hands of the presidency (citation). In his second campaign it was yet again placed on the back burner, better yet badly taken advantage of, “…reported that President Juan Orlando Hernández that millions of dollars of public funds from the country’s health care system had been funneled to the ruling National Party and his election campaign” (Main, 2016). Past and present actions of the Honduras government officials continually lack the genuineness and dedication to addressing any public health…
