Paul Rusesabagina saved more than 1,200 refugees in his hotel, what was the world doing to help refugees during the genocide? Nothing, the UN hardly helped at all during the entire genocide. Paul was the hotel manager for the hotel Diplomates, a high end hotel where foreigner government officials stayed. Another hotel, hotel Mille Collines, was another hotel Paul had access to. During the Rwandan genocide Paul kept over a thousand Tutsi and moderate Hutu save in the walls of the Mille Collines. He kept these people safe with words, drinks and lots of phone calls. While Paul and a few other’s tried to save people in Rwanda the whole world turned it’s back on the small country even though they knew what was going on and then decided to beat…

When sitting at the bar, UN Colonel Oliver tells Paul why the world is not helping in Rwanda: “You're black. You're not even a n***er. You're an African.” This quote is significant because it addresses the theme of racism. In this movie, Rwanda is going through a violent rebellion that leads to the national genocide of the Tutsi people. Even though the UN knows this, the West is hesitant to act or care because the victims are black. The lack of global help emphasizes the racial prejudice shown towards black people in the 1990’s. In the movie, white people only help white people while everyone else is left to defend for themselves. When Colonel Oliver explains to Paul why the world won’t help, he exposes this racist mentality held by most people.…

Genocide, and act that said to never occur again by the Genocide Convention, has come through time and time again. Each genocide, including the Rwandan Genocide, leaving countless numbers of men, women, and children wounded and lifeless. The imperialism brought by the Belgian empire onto Rwanda was the start of the deadly massacre. The lack of international aid from the rest of the world caused the genocide to last longer and longer eventually ending after 100 days. Finally a young population gave the people of Rwanda a little more motivation to start the horrifying mass killing. Imperialism, lack of international aid, and a young population were all factors in the start of the genocide but clearly imperialism is the most significant which without the genocide would have never started.…

The role of Paul in Hotel Rwanda exemplified the extent to which economic and political globalization can be positive and beneficial to society. As the manager of the hotel, Paul was capable of building relationships with officials who had authority to help. He faced the dilemma of being Hutu and being married to a Tutsi and understood that he couldn't escape the war zone without outside help so he relied on the UN. Paul had a system of networks that he used and understood the technological and economic advances he shared with the Western world. He turned the hotel into a fugitive camp and encouraged them to call family in order to escape.…

The genocide itself lasted around 100days and approximately 800,000 people were killed (8,000 a day some estimates have seen this number rise as high as a million deaths, however, an official figure has never been released, 800,000 is the most common figure and is the one quoted by human rights organizations. The conflict occurred as a result of long standing tensions between the 85% majority Hutu (meaning servant) population and 14% minority Tutsi (meaning rich in cattle) aristocracy as put in place by colonial Belgium. They had since been removed from power in the 1962 rebellion and since then had been seen as second class citizens. As a result of this, socio-ethnic tensions had been greatly increased and were only going to rise higher.…
