In 1899, right after the First Opium War, China was under the control of European powers and Japan, Qing Dynasty was so weak that hardly could defeat these powers. Each of these powers found out that China was a country which owned variety of resource. Therefore, all of them wanted to trade with China to earn more benefit and robbed various parts of coastal places, unfold Chinese territorial and Administrative integrity and would not interfere with the free use of the treaty ports within their spheres of inference in China. John Hay, the private secretary to Abraham Lincoln, the person who proposed the Open Door Policy. At that time, the United States was just finished the invasion of Philippine with Spanish and turned to China. They also had great interest in China and found out that China was the biggest market in the whole world. The Open Door Policy was declared base on this situation.
Hay said,“Earnestly desirous to remove any cause of irritation and to ensure at the same time to the commerce of all nations in China...shall enjoy perfect equality of treatment for their commerce and navigation within such spheres.” The purpose of writing the document was to reduce the power countries had gained from their spheres of influence. The United States has progressed economically and as a result methods of expansionism have evolved but it also tried to stay with the ideals of the forefathers. In Document C the importance of naval power is expressed and it outlines the obligations: the protection of the chief harbors by fortification and coast-defense ships, the naval force, the arm of offensive power which alone enables a country to extend its influence outward, and that no foreign state should henceforth acquire a coaling position within three thousand miles of San Francisco. In Document E Naval dominance in the Pacific Ocean is further stated by Senator Albert J. Beveridge in his speech to the 56th Congress. It states “The Pacific is our ocean…And the Pacific is the ocean of the commerce of the future…The power that rules the Pacific, therefore, is the power that rules the world.” America began expanding to find markets for our ever-growing production. Once it had conquered the continental United States, it had the ambition to take on the world, as well as a faith in God that expanded. The United States could withstand the competition involved in economic world dominance because of the acquisition of a naval power. This is shown in Document G; the cartoon of American Diplomacy in 1900. Uncle Sam is standing at the forefront of China’s open door holding the key which represents American Diplomacy. The Roosevelt Corollary was the most important departure from past United States expansionism it made the acquisition of…

Around 1895, after Japan won the Sino-Japanese War, Japan, France, Germany, Russia, and Britain divided in China’s coast into spate parts. In 1899, to ensure the establishment of American interest in Asia, U.S. Secretary of State John Hay sent a letter to these countries that essentially demanded equal economic access to China’s markets for all nations. The reciprocal exchange of market access rights which occurs through such agreements amounts to an international exchange of domestic political support between governments that helps policymakers to overcome the protectionist bias of uncoordinated trade policies. In order to protect the negotiated balance of rights and obligations from eroding -e.g., by trade restrictions which one government may introduce in violation of the trade agreement in order to enhance its political support from import-competing interests - trade agreements usually include dispute settlement mechanisms based on diplomatic and/or adjudicative procedures.…

The first principle to introduce is trading without discrimination, having two important components which are most-favoured-nation (MFN) and national treatment. Both are inserted as main rules in WTO on goods, intellectual property and services (Hoekman & Kostecki, 2009). However, the MFN rule can be briefly explained as a rule that makes a product made in a particular member country to be treated not less favourably (WTO, n.d.), or in simple language to be treated the same as a similar product that is made in another country. Although exceptions can be allowed, such as creating Free Trade Agreements such as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), or developing countries may be given special access into their markets. But generally, if a country decided to the lowering of trade barrier or market opening, the same must happen to the same products from all members and partners no matter the circumstances (Hoekman & Kostecki, 2009).…

In many areas in the world, countries established agreements that permit free trade, free movement of capital, and labor between member states and nations seeking a mutual benefit. In the case of GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council), the purpose of establishing this regional integration was to improve commercial operations of those states, as well as finance operations, improve security, access larger markets, and compete on a global standard, in a world driven by globalization (Beidas-Strom S et al.
