The Importance of Language Maintenance at Home.
Immigrant families come from numerous parts of the world to settle in the United States for a variety of reasons. Whether they come for economic prosperity or to escape persecution, and whether the stay is intended to be permanent or temporary, as long as they are speakers of a language other than English, they will face the dilemma of language maintenance. Parents have to make the decision whether they want their children to retain their culture, including their language, and have to find ways to make that happen in a country where assimilation can be very easy. That is why practicing all of these skills at home is so important. The key point for the language to be maintained, it needs to be passed on to, and acquired by, each successive generation. Because language is tied not only to communication with family but to cultural identity as well, it is more than often parents who decide to teach their mother tongue to their children. Over time, many minority languages experience language shifts and changes. As children partake in school related activities, are exposed to media in the majority language, and become more assimilated into the dominant society, they may feel less positive towards their heritage language and use it less. Although there are bilingual programs that give students access to education in their mother tongue, the effect on heritage language maintenance is minimal for a number of reasons. The intent is usually to foster more efficient English language acquisition, the programs are only offered in select areas they are offered only in languages with a large population, and many more other reasons. Language maintenance is then left largely to the family or community. Attitudes toward this language maintenance can vary from one language group to another, and from one family to the next, however.

    Many immigrants like to live in communities with similar back grounds, so they can support each other. This helps the families live somewhere completely different but feel safer. In these communities the language spoken among members tends to be their native language. This puts their children in a very unique situation.     The United States also needs to make a decision about whether they want “semilingualism” or “balanced bilingualism.” The United States’ current bilingual education programs are more of a semilingualism approach, where one language is considerably better than the other.     In the article “Mother Tongue”, Amy Tan emphasizes the idea that we all speak different languages unconsciously and that we are categorized by the way we speak. Language is power; people develop that power through their own sense of cultural and historical language and usage because language comes from culture. In “Mother Tongue,” Amy Tan discusses the different experiences she had that made her realized the different types of "English’s" she uses. The first time she realized this was when she was giving a talk about her book, The Joy Luck Club. When realizing that she had been using proper English to speak to her audience, after seeing her mother in the crowd. A language she had never used with her mother but her mother understood it. Tan felt embarrassed because the only way her mother would communicate with her was through “broken” English and contradicts how much she actually understands.     In response to the question, describe your feelings towards bilingualism, there were three major common themes that were shown throughout the surveys. These main themes consisted of bilingualism being a positive quality due to greater job opportunities, being able to communicate and connect with a wider variety of people and connecting cultures, and only a select few felt negatively towards bilingualism and felt it was not useful. The ability to communicate with others who speak Spanish while having the ability to speak English and be able to communicate with the dominant English speaking portion of society was a skill set they heavily valued as noted on several surveys. Many of the students who considered themselves to be of Spanish language heritage have parents whose native language is Spanish. This could contribute to their positive outlook on bilingualism. In 78% of the Spanish heritage student responses, their feelings towards bilingualism were positive due to this reason. Our society has become very multicultural and thus being able to communicate and connect with other cultures through various languages is a necessity for many who deal with a diverse crowd. Another theme presented in response to this question was that there was a positive outlook towards bilingualism due to the greater amount of job opportunities in the work field. Alba, Logan, Lutz, and Stults (2002) agree that bilingualism brings greater benefits than monolinguals can obtain, in both the working world, and as a way of acculturation. Close to 44% of both populations surveyed had the common theme of bilingualism being positive due to greater job opportunities.
