Hays County Veterans Service Office is an office assisting the veterans of Hays County to apply for their benefits through the Veterans Administration (VA). Miles Nelson is one of the Veterans Service Officers working at Hays County Veterans Services. Miles is also a student at Texas State University. He is in his senior year studying for his Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology. While Miles has other degrees, he states that Anthropology is the one he would consider to be the most applicable in this situation. Miles is a veteran himself. A veteran does this with a DD214 which shows proof and discharge of service. Depending on the type of discharge that was given, some veterans may not qualify for services. Those discharged with a dishonorable discharge do not qualify for veterans benefits through the VA. Veterans discharged with a general discharge- other than honorable will get some benefits, but not as many as those with an honorable discharge.
Hays County Veterans Services is a county funded organization. The county is the one providing the resource and the funding. While it is considered public, only veterans and family members with specific qualifying factors acting on behalf of the veteran can utilize the service. “Public social agencies are run by some designated unit of government and are usually regulated by laws impacting policy” (Kirst-Ashman, 2013, p. 132). This places them in a situation to refer clients so that they may utilize both services. The VA has a massive medical program for providing medical coverage to our veterans. Hays County Veterans Services helps the veteran obtain financial compensation and educational benefits, while Hill Country Veterans Services is able to provide mental health services outside of the VA system. The VA hospital and clinics offers mental health treatment, however, the VA is a huge federal system dealing with many bureaucracy issues. The overwhelming numbers of countless injuries, both physical and mental of our veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan crippled our already crowded VA system. Together Hays County Veterans Services and Hill Country Veterans Services and many others like them are more resources for our veterans to obtain and access their
