 Introduce the topic, i.e. the main points to be discussed later in the essay
 Definition of goal setting: “ Goal setting is defined as the process or deciding what you want to accomplish and developing a plan to achieve the future results”
 Thesis: To explore the benefits and disadvantages of goal setting used by management
Benefits
 Makes you responsible for your own success or failures
 Forces you to set priorities, therefore helping you to limit getting involved in distracting things
 Provides a specified path to follow, so you know where you are going

Disadvantages
 Employees may fear goal setting because they might be afraid of failing or criticised for not reaching the goal
 Unethical behaviour, for example people may steal sales from other employees to achieve their own personal goal
 Employees may think that their goal is unrealistic and believe they can’t achieve it, therefore giving up
Critical analysis
 Look at both advantages and disadvantages presented in the above paragraphs
 Explore the importance that goal setting has in organisations
 Summarise the argument and deliver a result as to whether or not goal setting is beneficial in corporations
Conclusion
 Re-introduce the thesis: To explore the benefits and disadvantages of goal setting used by management
 Summarise main points presented in the above paragraphs and conclude the discussion using the result from the critical analysis paragraph
