Does Money Buy Happiness?
Money is, and always will be a very important key for human beings to lead a decent and satisfying life. Unlike animals and plants, money defines the existence of human society, as we cannot live without it. Money is an important exchange for food, shelter and clothing as well as every other necessity in life. If money plays such an important role in our lives today, is it fitting that money is the key to happiness?

Many people believe that money is the root of all evil. It has caused War, corruption, stress and many other things. But contrary to that, I believe and agree that money is the key to human happiness. It has become indispensable in our lives when humans began using money for exchange of goods and services instead of he barter trade, which was popular hundreds of years ago. Humans work to earn an income that would enable them to bring food to the table, cloths themselves and others as well as indulge in pleasures that can be obtained only through money.

When we are able to afford goods and services, it inevitably grants us a lot of happiness, satisfaction and stability in our lives. In many poor countries such as Africa, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and others, millions of lives are in misery due to extreme poverty. They are deprived of happiness, dignity and a sense of direction and their lives as they live from hand to mouth and their future is at best uncertain. Thus, it would be foolish to think that money causes distress, and is the root cause of immorality and evil behavior. On the contrary, most of us earn an income through legal means, which allows us to maintain a good standard of living. It enables us to travel for holidays and have access to good food, medical facilities, and a lifestyle that grants us much happiness and satiety. Many parents admit that they slog at work so that they could provided comfort and stability to their offspring. Money especially comes in handy when a family member is stricken with a disease and cash is needed for

Since the time when cavemen inhabited the earth, it has become human nature to want more than what one has. Before the concept of wealth was developed, humans fulfilled their needs by trading or bartering with others based on items that they needed to survive. As mankind has advanced, humans have expanded into desiring nonessential things. Money has become a medium for exchange and a payment for work, and currency is now fundamental to most life on earth. Only three percent of Americans supply their own food through farming or hunting, which reflects that a massive ninety-seven percent of American’s use money every day to purchase food.1 The amount of money one possesses culturally determines their success in life. Humans who have wealth, also have influence, because they have what people desire and are able to live the lifestyle that they want. Although there will always be those who say money cannot buy happiness, money can lead to personal satisfaction, which in the end leads to happiness. Happiness can be created through the things that one owns, also by what they have compared to others around them. As said in the article, “The Happiness of Pursuit,” one helps obtain happiness because “money can boost happiness if it allows people to obtain more of the things they need and desire” (qtd. in Kluger). This is proven through the fact that when people get what they want, or get more of the things they enjoy, then they become happy, and money can be used to get those things. It can also be argued that based on the amount of money one makes, their happiness can either be increased or decreased. In an article from the Time Magazine, according to Belinda Luscombe, “the more [people make], the more they felt their life was going well.” If it is true that the more money people make, and the better they feel pertaining to how their life is going, then they will definitely be happier depending on their monetary wealth. With the constant arguing back and forth of people as to whether money makes people happy, sad, or has no affect, it is apparent that money does affect people’s lives. Money can both help people get what they want, also help make their lives feel as if they are going well, which are both…

“Money has never made man happy, nor will it, there is nothing in its nature to produce happiness. The more of it one has, the more one wants,” quoted by Benjamin Franklin. Money can’t buy happiness because materials are short lived, human connection is more important, and wealth undermines people’s ability to savor positive events from the sheer abundance. Money will accumulate, but it is easy to chase more and more until you realize you’re not actually living.…

How much we earn from money and our emotional state, information and support show the correlation between those factors, determining that money can buy happiness. “$76,000 in Minnesota is reaching the “happiness benchmark” ” (Short). Which means earning more than $76,000 as a yearly salary wont improve how individuals feel day-to-day. Although this income goes towards education, security, housing, and bills of standard living, etc. what’s left over is for people’s entertainment such as material or experiential things either way money is a motivator. Having goals to reach and opportunities are what people look for, primarily having more possibilities and choices you have is an accomplishment (Short). Throughout history money has been providing happiness and joy to most people. Allowing people to be free from financial issues and allowing then to achieve financial dreams however, money is not the total answer to success and happiness. Wisdom and truth are more important. The great Greek philosopher Socrates warned his fellow citizens by saying “are you not ashamed of heaping up the greatest amount of money and honour and reputation, and caring so little about wisdom and truth and the greatest improvement of the soul.” Unfortunately Socrates said that hundreds of years ago but this is a challenge that still relevant in today’s world because this world that we live in is full of mindless and unconscious people who believe that money and their reputation is the path to success and happiness. I personally disagree with this believe because I think that wisdom and truth are more important to success in wisdom and truth lays the foundation of every person. Once we have the wisdom money becomes secondary.…

We often ask ourselves which are the most important things in our life and whether these things depend on money. With regard to the situation we are in, we respond differently. If we are on a deserted island, money is useless – it would not help us survive even if we have it in great quantity. If we are drowning and we are holding in our hands all the wealth in the world, it will not help us but probably prevent us from being saved. However if we exclude such hypothetical situations, in the 21 century, living without money is impossible. And “The more… the more” as Winnie the Pooh said.…
