Big Brother is actually a metaphor for the party. Big
Brother refers to the constant surveillance of the party and what the party stands for. There is constant surveillance on the people of Oceania and whatever they do, Big Brother knows about.
There is a type of law enforcement named the Thought Police. They basically make sure that the people of Oceania are not planning anything to revolt or that their minds are solely set on satisfying Big Brother. This shows the reader that a society is being controlled by one person, using other people to do all the dirty work for him. The majority of the people enforcing the rules of Big Brother are using hatred to do so. If someone goes out of line, they get “vaporized” which, in essence, means someone gets killed or taken away. The fact of the matter, however, is that Big Brother uses hatred to control the people by forcing them to follow his rules and to make sure that nothing plagues the society and everything stays the same.
In our day and age, hatred is very prevalent to us with a sense of racial injustices and hatred towards certain groups of people. Our presidential election just ended and Donald
