Do We Need Elections In A Democracy?

According to the definition a Democracy is a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. Here in the United States, we have the pleasure of experiencing this type of government and are able to participate in voting. A vote is a formal expression of an individual’s choice in voting, for or against some motion, for or against some ballot question, for a certain candidate, a selection of candidates, or a political party. Elections have been the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy has operated since the 17th century and although there are some flaws in the system, this has still proven to be the most effective way to elect a President. Elections help to keep the citizens involved and provide them with political awareness in the electoral process itself along with the nominees that are running. Elections keep these nominees in the public eye, they are under much scrutiny and the electoral help to show the worth and value they have for the citizens standing behind them. There are different levels of elections, from the top you have Presidential elections, Congressional elections, which includes the Senate elections and the House of Representative elections, state elections, and local elections. Elections in a Democracy require a process that is started with a pre-selection through the organized political parties (Republicans, Democrats, Independent parties). Once this is complete politicians and their supporters compete for the voters through campaigns. Campaigning can be long and is seems to be more about each party trying to prove why the other party is more corrupt. This election, to me, was very disappointing to follow. I felt that neither party clearly represented how they were going to refine and change the policies they were not in favor of from the previous predecessor. Hilary describing how un-political Trump is and Trump describing how Hilary should be put in jail for her emails. This can be damaging to each party when dealing with the un-informed voter who will follow the bad propaganda and vote solely based on commercials and articles and not by any research and strong data. Depending on which channel you watch is which nominee is going to get a bad rap, except in this election each nominee gave themselves a bad rap.
