An essential skill that will help me succeed in college is time management. I chose this skill because it is crucial to know when a class is, when an assignment is due, what day the test is, when I have free time, and when I don’t. Mastering this skill will help me keep track of my time and ensure I get all my studies done while still having free time to do fun things. When I get to the point where I realize I don’t have time to go to the mall with everyone because I have to study for that math test, I will remind myself it is just part of the journey to my Medical Degree in Biochemistry that I will complete in the future. In “Managing Your Time: Setting Priorities and Developing Strategies for Success” Businessman Company writes,…

This is the act of generative notes. “Generative note-taking is more interpretive. For example, when students paraphrase what’s being said, draw little mind maps, and write down their own thoughts, their brains are doing a lot more cognitive processing (Kerr).” When students write their notes, they are required to analyze the material that they are recording, and can therefore can be digested. When students type notes, fractions of the lecture can filter in one ear and out the other. This is called non generative note-taking. “Non generative note-taking occurs when students write down word for word what they hear (Kerr).” Since students are using active or generative learning by using the writing approach, they can recall the information significantly easier than while typing, which leads me to believe that it is a better option, and high school and college students should try writing their…

Success in college depends on time control. Time control means learning how to control your time instead of procrastinating. There are three important steps that will help to improve controlling your time. The first step is to prepare a large monthly calendar to mark important dates for tests, due dates, and study plans for the semester. The second step is to mark a chart for a weekly study schedule that will last the semester. The last, most valuable time-control method is to make a daily or weekly “to do” list.…

I think I learn best with explanations of some material on the board or also with some pictures or drawings that help me understand what’s going on or how something is composed is really helpful to me. Two learning techniques that are efficient to me are just reading material a couple of times and memorizing important things. I believe memorization is also very useful to me. A learning technique I would like to acquire would probably be the technique of taking notes and actually finding taking notes useful. I have issues with taking notes because I get anxious or irritated whenever I try to summarize material for a test because I find it as a waste of time. I have the idea that I would use time more efficiently by just reading things and highlighting material rather than just writing it all over again.…

Note taking and note making is one of the most fundamental and important tasks that students must do. It cannot be doubted that a student that takes notes during lectures is more likely to achieve a higher grade compared to a student that does not. However, note taking might not have the positive effect the student wants if it is not done properly. “What to note down, how much to note down and how detailed the notes should be, takes time to develop” (Open University Malaysia [OUM], 2011, p. 92). Thus, this essay will focus on explaining the different methods of note making, how to take notes from printed materials and ways to develop good note taking skills during lectures. But first, an important question needs to be addressed. Why even take notes in the first place?…
