Although a career in dentistry requires hard working hours, this career suits my interests in teeth, provides good working condition and satisfies my life's demands.
Dentist is a nice career in healthcare, but it still has some disadvantages. One disadvantage of dentistry is hard working hours. Everyday, dentists have to work hour to hour in their offices. When the needs for nice smiles increase overtime, it is always dentists' jobs to find out some ways taking care of patient's teeth. Dentists should think about which is the best method to cure people, or how to work appropriately with each particular patient. Therefore, they might have to focus continuously and work very hard in order to satisfy those demands.
Nevertheless, there are numerous advantages I have found when researching a career in dentistry. First of all, it suits my abilities and interests in teeth. The passion for this career inspires me to find out many interesting things about being a dentist, especially the role of dentistry in our society. In a report provided by Electronic Ardell Wellness, the writer insists that “I predict that dentists in the near future, at least in substantial numbers, will become community leaders as healthy lifestyle promoters” (“lifestyle and health“). Having recognized the important role of a dentist, I am trying my best to become one. Moreover, I love the nature of this career. As the Bureau of Labor's Occupational Outlook Handbook mentions:
Dentists diagnose and treat problems with teeth and tissues in the mouth, along with giving advice and administering care to help prevent future problems. They provide instruction on diet,

One of the deep cleaning I observed was a patient with infection. I was extremely surprised to see the patient bleed during the cleaning. I think that visiting the dentist on a regular basis is very important because he or she keep their teeth clean and healthy. I could realize many patients discovered about their teeth’s condition through cleaning. I was able to see Dr. Sim perform many root canals, crowning teeth, and filling cavities during three days. Through shadowing I learned that being a dentist and dental hygienist are a very important position with lots of responsibility to their patients. It was time to learn again how important trusts between the doctor and patients. I believe that when patients develop this trust, they are more likely to comply with doctors’ recommendations and therefore get better care. This shadowing helped me realize the importance of good relationships between employer and employees. I can see they always had each other to rely on for help. I was impressed by the excitement and enthusiasm they had for their jobs, and for the company as a whole. I have not decided where to work after graduation. If I work, I felt inclined to work in such a pleasant work…

However, if you are really motivated to help people, the job will become bearable during the most stressful times. According to Herman Lee DDS, a general dentist with his own practice, dentistry is stressful because most patients are afraid of dentists. People do not like dentists because they have bad experiences, have to be poked with needles in their mouth, and associate pain when seeing a dentist (Lee, Herman). However, if you love what you do, you will be able to survive in this demanding profession. In his private practice, he receives around seven to nine patients daily. He also plays the piano and puts on classical music as the background music when working. Mekar Honda DDS works in a West Coast Dental corporation and sees around 30 patients daily. She states that the hardest patients she has are those with small mouths, children who are scared, and older people that tend to choke. She also has graduated dental students who work under her to gain experience. A lot of the graduates do not know a lot of things since each patient is different and not all of their conditions can be compared to the ones in the book. The book is limited and therefore during dental school students should join programs where they volunteer in third world countries to gain hands on experience (Honda). It is harder for her because she works for a corporation and has a schedule to follow. Mekar Honda DDS works from 9:00-6:00pm five days…
