Dental hygienist use ultrasonic scalars, sonic scalars, X-ray machines, and hand held scalars. Ultrasonic tools work by sound wave vibrations. They can cycle up to 50,000 per second, scraping away plaque and tartar from teeth. They cannot be used on a patient that has a pacemaker because the electromagnetic fields from these scalars may cause the pacemaker to stop working. Before using an ultra-sonic scalar, it is important to ask each and every patient if they have heart conditions requiring them to have a pacemaker. There are sonic scalars that also remove tartar and plaque on teeth. These scalars use compressed air and water to go deep into the gums to remove pieces of food and plaque. Sonic scalars do not interfere with pacemakers and are safe to use on all patients. Dental hygienist also use x-ray machines. X-ray machines are used to see pictures of patients jaw and teeth. Dental hygienist take and develop these picture for the dentist to use and review before working on a patient. Another tool is the hand held tool. There are two types of hand held scalars, the Ivory-C-1, and the G-11. These remove tartar below and above the gum line. They reach into the pockets of the teeth to remove tartar safely. Using the right tools and using them properly are vital to the patient’s safety and health

A Dental Hygienist is someone who cleans teeth, examines patients for any oral diseases, and educates patients on how to improve their dental hygiene. The best part of the day is probably how happy the kids are with their clean teeth. The most challenging part I assume would be dealing with the kids that are nervous and don’t want to be examined.…

Dentists and dental hygienists need to be knowledgeable, compassionate, and confident in treating patients with HIV/AIDS. The treatment of this infectious disease needs to be performed in a way that minimizes risks to other patients and health care professionals. Previous studies have shown an unwillingness of health care professionals in treating such individuals. This study examined the effectiveness of a training program for dental and dental hygiene students at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry (LLUSD) in treating patients with HIV/AIDS. The purpose of this program is to give students knowledge in treating HIV patients, to reduce the risk of transmission of this infectious disease to dental staff and others, and to reduce the stigma associated with treating these patients. This particular study addressed students’ comfort level in treating HIV/AIDS patients in three categories: homosexual/bisexual individuals, intravenous drug users, and individuals who have had blood…

There are many goals that I wish to achieve in my life. First, I want to pass my college classes and get into the dental hygienist program. Next, I want to become a dental hygienist because it is a good paying job. Lastly, I want to be able to move out and live comfortably. Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is not like the other motivation theories, this is because he believed an individual’s motives range from biological to individual to social needs. Maslow believed that an individual must accomplish the needs at the base of the pyramid first, before reaching the needs at the top. I believe my goals do align with Maslow’s theory. Passing my college classes fit in with the esteem section of the pyramid because it would bring a sense of accomplishment and confidence. Becoming a dental hygienist will satisfy the security section of the pyramid because I would be employed. Then, moving out and living comfortably would satisfy the physiological section because I would have a house which would provide warmth and shelter.…

While in the Dental Hygiene program here at USD, I hope to learn and accomplish a lot in the next couple years. Right now, my main goal is to take the program day by day and week by week. Since the program has started, I have realized that it requires a lot of compromise as well as time, which sometimes I do not have. With that, another one of my short term goals is to figure out how to better manage my time. With the start of school, there has been a lot of excitement over getting together and catching up with friends, as well as celebrating Coyote game days! Lately, it seems as if there are not enough hours in the day. I also want to work on keeping a positive mindset, even when I start to become discouraged and apprehensive. I think with…
