Critically evaluate, in relation to the common law duty of care, the liability of employers for references. How, if at all, does the liability of a university (such as the University of Sussex) differ regarding references given to potential employers in respect of current (or former) students.

Introduction
There are some cases talking about the duty of care and the liability of employers for references. In the 20th century, employees were against former employers who negligently gave unreal contents in employment references, the behavior of employers made employees lose opportunities of their future job.
For this essay, the key case, which I will evaluate, is Spring v Guardian Assurance plc. I also want to evaluate some another case: McKie v Swindon College. I am going to focus on the pure economic loss, breaching of duty, liability for psychiatric injury and a view about the references which are given by universities.

I also think it is essential for a university to write a favorable and accurate reference to their students. And the references, which are given to the students, need more details than ones which are given to the employers. For instance, the university of Sussex, if the university gives students the references negligently, other universities may not recruit the students which are from the university of Sussex, and then the university should owe the duty of care as they should know if they write an unreal reference, it will influence a student’s reputation, so the university should be responsible for its
