CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Introduction Grades in the realm of education are standardized measurement of varying levels of comprehension within a subject area. Grades are the measurement of student’s capabilities and to determine their strengths and weaknesses. This also serves as a tool which purpose is to determine the students’ strengths and weaknesses. It is important to use a grading system which helps teachers and school to determine the capabilities of students in each area. A system is a set of interacting or interdependent components forming an integrated whole or a set of element which are different from relationships of the set or its elements to other elements or sets. The new grading system which is the KPUT system divided into four components knowledge, process or skills, understanding and transfer. Knowledge is the component where you are questioned about the facts and definitions you’ve learned, which can be the basis of your stock knowledge about the basic definitions and facts about the lessons you’ve tackled. Process is where you will apply all your techniques and skills you’ve learned about the lessons in a given question or problem. Understanding is a component that will test your deep understanding about the lesson and it will also use your cleverness and knowledge to determine if you really understood the lesson. Transfer where students apply and relate their understandings and learning in real life situation. This new grading system has an advantages and disadvantages to the students but this system can easily determine the strengths and weaknesses of students because of the components in the system. This can be their basis in their studies. The study aims to identify the effects of the KPUT grading system to the students. And also to identify the advantages and disadvantages of the KPUT grading system.

Grades in the realm of education are standardized measurements of varying levels of comprehension within a subject area .The New Scheme of Grading has been introduced with the aim that it will minimize misclassification of students on the basis of marks. It will eliminate unhealthy competition among high achievers. It will reduce pressure and will provide the learner with more flexibility. It will lead to a focus on a better learning environment Operational It will facilitate joyful and stress free learning. In grading system “My friends who have got 71 or 79 marks will be awarded the same grade.” In grading system every student has to work really hard and now teachers has also right for giving the grades according to student’s punctuality on work .I think it’s quite a good system because it tests students frequently to see if they are learning the required syllabus. Also I believe grading system is better because it gives the chance to average student also to score good marks and it attracts their interest also towards their school curriculum. Furthermore awarding of grades has number of advantages over awarding of numerical marks as it considerably reduces inter and intra examiner variability in marking. Statistical research in assessment techniques indicates that there is a rise in individual intellect of students to the extent of 5% to 15% after the enforcement of grading system. This system puts students of similar potential in same ability bands. Lastly, it will reduce undesired and unsound comparison of small difference of marks. But again the same line “My friends who have got 71 or 79 marks will be awarded the same grade.” is said to be not justified by some as, they think that a person who has got 8% less is should not be treated and…
