What was Andrew`s view of marriage? Why was he recentful and confused? Mr. Andrew had had a disappointing evening with Christine. He was continuously thinking about his friends who were being decieved by their wives or were living apart from their wives. This marriages were absolute failures .From all these instances he reasoned that marriage was an idyllic state. But with the image of Christine in front of him, he couldn’t think so. This conflict between his doubting and reasoning mind and emotionally overflowing heart caused him to be resentful. Why was Joe Morgan relieved to see Andrew Manson? Joe Morgan's wife was about to give birth to their child. Andrew was the doctor who was to carry out the delivery. Morgan was anxiously waiting outside for the news of his child. Since Andrew was able to save the child, it changed his outlook towards life. He was relieved to see him because he had saved Morgan's new born baby. What dilemma was Andrew caught in? How did he resolve it? Post an hour's long and harsh struggle, the child that Andrew had helped to deliver was born lifeless. As he gazed down at the still form, Andrew shivered to think how he had failed to keep his promise of delivering the baby safely. He hesitated, he was torn between the desire to attempt to resuscitate the child and his obligation towards saving the mother who was in a desperate state after the birth of her child. The question at hand was whom to save, the stillborn baby or the mother whose heart was still beating. The dilemma was so pressing that he did not resolve it consciously, he blindly and instinctively chose to pay attention to Susan Morgan, the mother who now lay collapsed, with almost no pulse. He began to race to save her with her ebbing strength...
