Benjamin Braddock characterization
The Graduate – Benjamin Braddock Characterization
The film „The Graduate“, published in 1967 tells the story of a young man who has to deal with the problems of having no aim in life and getting seduced by an elder woman. Benjamin Braddock, played by Dustin Hoffman, is the protagonist and he is going to be the topic of this characterization.

Benjamin, a recent college graduate, got the features of a normal 20 years old male in the 1960`s. Brown hair, mid-tall, well-dressed, trained and good-looking. Furthermore his father owns a fortune, what allowed him to go to college in the East. He used to be quite dedicated in college, being the captain of several clubs, always having good grades and winning an award for his extraordinary work. The Braddock parents are very proud of him for having achieved so much in his so short life but their relationship can be shaky. They often try to show him off to their friends and humiliate him at some points in the film (scene where he gets his birthday present). But when he tries to tell them about his worries, doubts or problems they seem to be deaf sometimes (scene in front of the aquarium at the evening of his graduation party). However they do care about him and love him as all parents do.
On the other hand, he is a character who can be easily overlooked. His shyness and politeness characterize him and he does not have that many friends as you could distinguish from his graduation party. He conveys the impression of being extremely introverted and not attention seeking what might be a reason for why he is so lonely.
In many scenes he is shown as not saying very much and staring in the air while he is thinking about his future. As he just finished college he is unsure what to do next and becomes anxious because he wants it to be different (as he mentions to his father). But he does not want to go back to graduate school neither he wants to start a career. Following that he starts an affair with Mrs. Robinson, an old

To begin with, when he first meets a woman, he goes into one of two styles of conversation. The first is to assail her with a stream of personal questions: “What’s your name? Where do you live? Is that your real hair color? What kind of work do you do? Do you want to have kids someday? Are you seeing anyone? Would you like to have dinner with me?” Naturally, most women find this surprising and annoying. His other approach is to say the most banal things imaginable: “Nice day, isn’t it? I thought it might rain this morning, but it didn’t. It might rain tomorrow, but who knows. Last week was nice weather, too.” By this time the poor girl has either walked away or passed out from boredom.…

The developments and growth of the character name Miles was the person who changed through the story. Miles Halter a 16 year old kid who was ready to go to a boarding school was an anti-social person. As it stated in the story “the only thing worse than having a party that no one attends is having a party attended only by two vastly, deeply uninteresting people.”(John Green, Pg:4). This quote proves how he really didn’t have basically any friends. Miles shows in this quote how he was independent at school and really wasn’t interested in making friends. The two people that showed up really weren’t Miles friends since he said they were “deeply uninteresting people”, he just considered them as classmates. Miles shows how he starts off as being an isolated individual and really not in a hurry in making friends. The passage also represents how he wasn’t really disappointed in the fact that he didn’t have any friends. Basically he didn’t have anyone to rely on just his parents and himself. As I read through the story another quote that show how he started…

They were constantly telling him what to do and when to do it. However, Benjamin continued to ignore their constant demands and did the exact opposite of what he was told. He rebelled because he wanted to make himself happy before pleasing his parents. He was not ready to start a career or further his education; all he wanted to do was relax by his parent’s pool and not worry about his future just yet. The scene at his 21st birthday party finally allowed him to tune out the sound of his parents. He was given a scuba suit and was forced to test it out in front of everyone who was at his party. After he was forced into the pool, he found himself standing still at the bottom. He was finally alone and was not able to hear any of the noise coming from above the water. The camera angle shifted and was now from the perspective of Benjamin. It showed him looking up out of the water at his parents shouting at him, but he was not able to comprehend any of the words being yelled at him. This was just the start of his rebellion against his parents. The fact that he was underwater symbolized that Benjamin felt like his parents were drowning him in all of their expectations. He was suffocating and was finally able to be at peace at the bottom of the pool. The majority of the youth at this time was searching for peace, and the only way of obtaining it was to rebel against the conformity of their parents. They all felt like they were being drowned; therefore they continued to rebel in ways that disgusted their parents and even disgraced…

`The young American teenager wasn’t created in a decade; it took about two and a half centuries for the description of adolescence as idealistic, crude, energetic, innocent, and greedy. Benjamin Franklin a inventor in the late 19 century came about and discovered how to turn on a light bulb, but he also came from a generation of apprentices learning specific skills from their masters about life styles and education from Great Britain. In the late 1700s young adolescence mostly males were send to Europe as apprentices to other family households to improve their writing and reading skills as America grew. Benjamin was a runaway apprentice that disagreed with his master’s teachings rebelling and becoming the most…

First, let’s review the characters in the main story, of which there are few in the literary story numbering about 17, where the film contains over 50 characters plus the extras. We will stick with core characters of the film and start with the main character, Benjamin Button, who was born old and aged to his youth that was portrayed by Brad Pitt in the movie. The story version of Benjamin has more humor about him whereas the movie version was more of a romantic with only rare glimpses of the humor that is portrayed in the original story. An example of the humor found in the story is when Benjamin was born his father needed to get him home but the hospital only supplied a blanket. So the father was forced to run and get him men’s clothing, when he was leaving to go shop for his son Benjamin shouts out as he leaves, “And a can, father. I want to have a cane.” (Fitzgerald p.163) I had to chuckle because how does he know he needs this, he was just born. Though both versions were old men that grew up to be young men, their starts were very different. The film portrayed Benjamin as a baby that was aged like an old man but in relevant size, whereas the story had Benjamin the size of an old adult. Again, the humor of a woman being able to carry a child of that size is just absurd. The men grow up to work but the two versions are…

After close examination, however, the pool fills a critical role as the symbol of the recent college-graduate's internal struggle with decisions regarding his future. Key scenes involving the swimming pool and the related aquarium in Ben's room chronicle the evolution of his transition from adolescents into adulthood.…
