Banana slugs are often bright yellow (giving rise to the banana sobriquet) although they may also be greenish, brown, tan, or white. The species Ariolimax columbianus sometimes has black spots that are so extensive that the animal looks almost entirely black. Individual slugs will change colors with alterations in food consumption, light exposure, and moisture levels. Color may also indicate whether a slug is healthy or injured or what age it is.[4]

The Pacific banana slug is the second-largest species of terrestrial slug in the world, growing up to 25 centimetres (9.8 in) long,[5] and weights of 115 grams (4.1 ounces).[6] (The largest slug species is Limax cinereoniger of Europe, which can reach 30 centimetres

It uses this toothy tongue (radula) like a file so it can eat its food.[7] Individuals can move at 6 1⁄2 inches (17 cm) per minute.[8]

Slugs use two pairs of tentacles to sense their environment. The larger, upper pair, termed "eyestalks," are used to detect light or movement. The second, lower pair are used to detect chemicals. The tentacles can retract and extend themselves to avoid damage. If a predator bites off a tentacle, the slug can grow a new one.

Banana slugs have a single lung (on the right side) which opens externally via a pneumostome. The pneumostome lung cavity is heavily vascularized to allow gas exchange. Dehydration is a major problem for the mollusk; to combat this, banana slugs excrete a thick coating of mucus around their bodies and can also aestivate. To do so, they secrete a protective layer of mucus and insulate themselves with a layer of soil and leaves. They remain inactive in this state until the environment becomes moist again.

This individual Ariolimax columbianus has numerous black spots. The patterning may be so extensive as to make the animal look almost solid black.     There can be a few explanations for these occurrences. First we notice that when the sun is higher in the sky the slugs move further away, and when it is lower, or not in the sky the slugs get closer together. This could be a result of the slugs trying to regulate their body heat. As the sun gets higher, the warmer the water gets and the warmer the slugs get and want to move further away from each other so they don't over heat, and then as the sun sets they move closer so they can use each others body heat to warm up. Another explanation of why the slugs move could be that they cluster together at night could be for protection. During the day they can move around because the sun is up and it’s easier to see their predators, but at night their vision is impaired and they group together because it’s harder for predators to pick on one snail to attack. The sea slugs also could be spreading out during the day do to the fact that they eat during the day. Unlike plants that are heterotrophic, the slugs are autotrophic and get their nutrients from other organisms.     If a diver or went snorkeling, it would be very lucky to find the Aplysina archeri, also known as the Stove Pipe Sponge. This sponge is in the Kingdom of Animalia, Phylum of Porifera, Class of Demosphongiae, Order of Verongida, Family of Aplysinidae, Genus of Aplysina, and Species of A. archeri. This sponge gets its name from its cylindrical shape and long tube like structure. It can grow up to 150 cm long with diameter of 10 cm. Snails feed off these sponge but are no threat to them compared to humans. The dense populations of these sponges have gone down because of toxic dumps and the oil spill. Stove Pipe Sponges are filter feeders and eat plankton or suspended detritus as it passes them. They reproduce sexually and asexually. When they release sperm, it floats in the oceans water and eventually lands somewhere. Wherever it lands, it begins to reproduce cells and grow. They can take up to hundreds of years to grow and don’t stop until they die.     We identified the eubranchipus, a organism with similar characteristics to one of a shrimp. Another name for it would be the fairy shrimp.
