Augmented Reality (AR) is a new technology that involves the overlay of computer graphics on the real world. Its goal is to add information and meaning to a real world object or place. It takes a real object or space as the foundation and incorporates technologies that add contextual data to deepen a person’s understanding of the subject. AR is about augmenting the real world environment with virtual information by improving people’s senses and skills. AR mixes virtual characters with the actual world. There are three common characteristics of AR scenes: combination of the real and virtual, interactive in real-time, and having the scenes registered in 3D.

The aim of the paper is to call attention to the widespread use of Augmented Reality in today’s world through the advanced technology in internet and mobile devices. The motivation is to facilitate the use of Augmented Reality in education methods and research work. It will provide better and creative methods of learning. The technology of Augmented Reality was developed to provide a better and enhanced view of the real world and provide the information to the user about any object he looks at in his physical environment. The next sections will explain about the technology, its working, scope, applications, previous works, conclusions and the future work.


Augmented reality (AR) is a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are by augmented computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. The term augmented reality is believed to have been coined in 1990 by Thomas Caudell, working at Boeing.[1] With the progress of information technology development, the form of digital learning multimedia materials has changed dramatically from traditional books to digital media. With the help of advanced AR technology (e.g. adding computer vision and object recognition) the information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive and digitally manipulable. Augmented reality is the process of adding computer graphics elements to images of real scenes to provide all kinds of information to the user.

A range of technologies can be used for augmented reality. Many augmented reality projects use headgear or a similar device that projects data into the user’s field of vision, corresponding with a real object or space the user is observing. In the case of a technical course on PC maintenance, for example, augmented reality might overlay a schematic diagram onto the inside of a computer, allowing students to identify the various components and access technical specifications about them. PDAs or other portable devices can use GPS data to provide users with context including visual, audio, or text-based data about real objects or places.[2]

The scene generator is the device or software responsible for rendering the scene. Rendering is not currently one of the major problems in AR, because a few virtual objects need to be drawn, and they often do not necessarily have to be realistically rendered in order to serve the purposes of the application.
