It could be argued by the Western world, that science is our God. Due to the vast progression in science, man has been able to make amazing discoveries and accomplishments, such as putting roving robots on mars, creating machines that can go faster than the speed of sound and creating a thirty inch television that can be rolled up and be put in a paper towel tube for our convenience. While scientific discoveries and accomplishments are usually amazing, beneficial and bring further understanding of the world around us, there is a real danger of replacing God with science, such as those who hold the belief of scientific naturalism. Those who uphold scientific naturalism believe that “nothing exists except the material, there are no nonphysical entities such as God or souls”, as they shut out God completely and try to impose their beliefs on the world around them (Wilkens & Sanford, 2009, p. 101).…

Evaluate Atheism as a philosophical perspective Atheism, meaning 'a belief without God' is a belief that is becoming increasingly popular in the Western society. Essentially, some atheists claim to be anti-religion and reject religious dogmas; however, I should first establish that there are two different types of atheists. The first is known as positive atheism where the individual not only refute the arguments for the existence of God but also goes a step further to develop arguments. The second type also known as negative atheism does not consider the existence of god and does not feel that the arguments for the existence of God are not sufficient enough to spark a belief. For the purpose of this essay, I will mostly argue from and against a positive atheist’s perspective that not only consciously refuses to believe in a God but also chooses to develop arguments. A philosophical consideration that can be raised from the question is if Atheism has the belief that there is no God then surely it can still be classed as a religion?…

Since the 1980s, the Discovery Institute has challenged the theory of evolution under the guise of the concept of “intelligent design.” Early in the 19th century the idea was eloquently presented by William Paley who used the analogy, still cited today, of finding a watch on s beach and making the assumption that its existence was a result of random events. A result has been an increase in pressure, particularly in the US, to teach…

Professor Mark Wesley Forman Introduction In 1968, H.J. McCloskey wrote an article on atheism called “On Being an Atheist.” He states that there are three proofs which do seem to move ordinary theists to their theism to constitute major motivations towards a belief in God, namely the cosmological proof, the teleological proof, and the argument from design (McCloskey). In his article he states that these proofs are inadequate, and that atheism is much more comfortable than theism. He also says that most theists don’t come to the belief in God through as a reflection on the proofs, but they come to a belief in God through others reasons and factors. Through our faith as theists we believe God exists and that the existence of God is the best explanation for the effects we observe in the universe. Philosophers say that an argument is a set of statements or propositions, which are premises, which show that another statement, the conclusion, is true. Throughout this paper I will mention the premises and conclusions of each argument and explain why McCloskey is incorrect when trying to prove his arguments.…

GENERAL INTRODUCTION From time immemorial man is unveiling mysteries. From an unspecific point in the past there exists a great mystery in the human minds viz. God. Human mind had always been baffled with the concept of God. Many curious seekers have tried to put their reasoning in black and white either to prove or disprove the existence of God. Still these intellectual arguments often prove inadequate; either to prove or disprove. Through this seminar I intend to compare two different stands on the existence of God; that of Thomas Aquinas, the medieval philosopher, and Richard Dawkins, the neo - Darwinist. Here we aim not to get involved in the vast world of metaphysics, theodicy or natural science but to logically analyse two different reasoning processes involved. While dealing with the same we must have the cultural and scientific contexts in which these two stands and arguments originate. The five ways to prove God’s existence proposed by Aquinas in Summa Theologiae came out during the medieval period which was the golden era of Christian philosophical thoughts but of lesser scientific developments. Richard Dawkins’ arguments in The God Delusion came out in 2006 which specifically was a time of advanced Science and declining period of philosophical arguments. Thus the two differ in scientific context. Again, Aquinas lived in the golden period of his religion and his intent was only to find a rational justification to his belief whereas Dawkins in a materialistic world where the creation theory - evolution theory clash prevails.…
