1. Determine the electronegativity between the atoms of each molecule.
Answer: H20: 3.5 – 2.1 = 1.4 CH4: 2.5 – 2.1 = 0.4 NH3: 3.0 – 2.1 = 0.9 Co2: 3.5 – 2.5 = 1.0

2. Identify the bond as either ionic or covalent. H20: Covalent CH4: Covalent CO2: Covalent NH3: Covalent

3. State whether the molecule is polar or non-polar.

H20: Polar Co2: Nonpolar CH4 Nonpolar NH3: Polar

4. Identify the structure as having hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole moments or London dispersion forces (LDF).

H20 : Hydrogen Bonding CH4: LDF CO2: LDF
NH3: Hydrogen Bonding

Structure D’s conformation required the greatest energy overall. Structures A and B, structures C and D, and structures E and F are diastereomers of each other. The cis structure of each pair seems to require greater energy for all pairs. The energy differences between structures A and B is about ∆6kj/mol, structures C and D have energy differences of about ∆20kj/mol and structures E and F, ∆15 kj/mol. Structure A, compared to B, had less energy because the R group is in equatorial, the same for structures E, in the among the E and F…

For station 1 water was the most soluble because it dissolved in almost all the solids and the other two liquids couldn’t. The water is soluble because the water when the solid is placed into it, it converts into a polar solvent molecule which then is able to liquefy the solid. For station 2, Ethanol is more viscous than any of the other solvent because it has a higher viscosity. In station 3, water boils the fastest because the molecules are moving so quickly in the glass…
