In the article, Infant Neurosensory Development: Considerations for Infant Child Care, The internal and external environments affect the development of physical and neural structures that guide visual, auditory, chemosensory, somatosensory, and limbic system functions. These systems both contribute and respond to cognitive development, including memory (Fields2005). This article elaborates on ways to help stimulate the infant’s brain for optimal brain growth and development. One of the ways included making sure the infant got ample REM sleep. Genes also play an important role in the brain development. When babies are exposed to such toxins as smoke and alcohol it deprives the brain and can alter the developmental process. Four contextual elements assist understanding of infant development: genetics, environment, stimulation, and relationships. I found it interesting that “Socialization also plays a critical role in development, even before birth. The circuitry of the brain is developed through stimulation presented with adequate intensity, repetition, and duration to create and amplify the neural connections which are stored in short-term and, eventually, in long-term memory. Learning occurs through successive memories which arise from the connections between neurons that have been strengthened by repeated stimulation (Fields 2005). P176”.

I liked this article because it broke everything down into different categories of brain development and it relates to what we have been studying in relation to theorist. “The Brain combines concepts from two major theorists. Vygotsky (1978) claimed that 90% of learning occurs from the influence of the ‘‘proximal environment’’ which encompasses approximately a five foot circumference around the infant.     Tommy is sitting on the floor with his toys around him. His teacher sits on the floor next to him and he begins to hand his teacher a series of toys. He is interested in the reaction of his teacher as he hands her his blocks, one by one. Tommy leans forward, grabs a block and hands it to his teacher. He watches her face and sort of drops his mouth open as he waits for her reaction. She then tells him the letter and color on the block. He nods his head forward and then reaches for another block and proceeds to pick up another block. After picking up 5 blocks and handing them to his teacher he then crawls across the floor to a toy car and pushes it for a moment. He looks up at his teacher to see what she is doing and pushes the car toward her. He smiles at her and she smiles back and says “Is that your car?” he smiles again and nods his head forward.     Every day teachers struggle to find effective tools for helping children use their brains to their greatest capacity. In a sense, both groups are focusing on different aspects of the same issues.     Physical - Physical development obviously starts long before the common "infantile" stage that we all think of today. Brain development begins in the weeks following conception. A noticeable brain is apparent after only three to four weeks, when the neural plate folds up to form the neural tube. The bottom of the tube becomes the spinal cord. "Lumps" then emerge at the top of the tube and form the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain. The so-called primitive or lower portions of the brain develop earliest, and regulate such biological functions as digestion, respiration, and elimination; they also control sleep-wake states and permit simple motor reactions. All of the above traits of the brain are what makes life possible. By three months after conception, the midbrain and hindbrain are well on their way to being developed, but the forebrain still has a long way to go. Gradually these two hemispheres become larger and more convoluted, making for a characteristically human brain. Many processes are involved in early brain development, but I won't go into much detail as they are not true parts of infancy physical development. These processes include 1proliferation of brain cells, where neurons are produced at a staggering rate during the prenatal period, 2migration, when neurons migrate from their place of origin to places where they will become part of specialized functioning units, and finally 3organization, which is a complex process involving differentiation of neurons, synapse formation, and competition among and pruning of neurons. The brain weighs about 25% of its adult total at birth, and by age 2, it reaches 75%. Lateralization is one important feature of brain organization, which causes the two hemispheres of the cerebral cortex to become asymmetrical.…
