  1. Address the idea that The Great Gatsby is autobiographical in nature. Fitzgerald has written himself into the characters of Nick and Gatsby, to some degree. Carefully consider which character has more of Fitzgerald's persona, or whether they are relatively equal.
  2. Compare Gatsby and Tom. In that comparison, be sure to consider how they are alike, but also the ways in which they are different. Tom is portrayed in a very negative light throughout the book, and it is important to analyze why Daisy would choose to stay.
  3. Consider the ways in which Gatsby represents the American dream, and what the novel says about that dream. Address how dreams, wealth, and time relate to one another.
