William Blake's Chimney Sweeper Essay Example
William Blake's "The Chimney Sweeper" offers a graphic portrayal of a particular cultural aspect of England in the 1790s. By examining my interactions with the poem, I will attempt to analyse and contrast my own belief system against that which is presented in the text.

Blake's poem was initially very striking to me. While reading the first stanza, I was shocked and horrified by the imagery presented by the young narrator. I felt compelled to cry for the poor boy, and then became angry at his father for placing him in such a situation. In the second and third stanzas, I empathized with 'little Tom Darce' and pictured how frightened he must have been because of his nightmare; he seemed to be in great need of care and love, both of which I wished I could provide him. The imagery in the fourth and fifth paragraphs struck me as bright, beautiful and very innocent, thus causing me to wish that all the boys could live in such a wonderful environment. My reaction to the final stanza was a sense of distress; the boys had nothing to hope for, but were forced to perform a task which would eventually kill them. After reading the poem I was left with several impressions in my mind. The young and innocent portrayal of the narrator seemed to be a powerful influence on my emotional reactions to the poem. I was left with a sense of helplessness and frustration that I was not able to help the boys out of their oppressed state, and because I possess some knowledge of this period of history and culture, I know that the events described in the poem actually took place, and thus the poem becomes even more emotionally moving. It is the value system of the people of England in the 1790s which comes into sharp opposition with my own, especially with the issues that are in relation to the way that children should be treated; these people would essentially condemn their children to death so that they themselves could live.     In William Blake’s “A Poison Tree”, he takes on a simple approach at describing the different aspects and consequences of anger. The poem starts off by saying, “I was angry with my friend; I told my wrath, my wrath did end” (Blake 1,2). Which is a very simple poetic way of saying he was angry, but he felt better after confessing his true feelings.     During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Industrial Revolution was born in England. With this new growth in industry and capitalism, businessmen recognized the advantage of cheap labor. Children were among the most abused work force in that country 's history. William Blake saw this increase of social injustice and was overwhelmed, so he began to write about this hypocrisy of social values that he felt was being carefully hidden from the mainstream. While most considered this unavoidable, child labor was a topic that they did not discuss openly in social groups. Blake wanted to change all of that. As a social critic, he wrote many poems condemning the hypocrisy between these two worlds, for example, "The Chimney Sweeper," "London," and "The Garden of Love." In "London," Blake reveals that this hypocrisy has robbed the world of innocence and spirit. In the first two lines, Blake repeats the word "charter 'd." He uses this repetition to stress the mechanical behavior of the world around him. The word "charter" has connotations of something that can be sold or hired for money. Blake is connecting this idea with the chartered rights of Englishmen given three hundred years ago by the crown and never to be taken away. By using the subject ?street,? and the river ?Thames,? Blake is announcing to the world that this structural society has even corrupted nature. In the next two lines he comments on the beaten men of society: ?. . . every face I meet / Marks of weakness, marks of woe." This behavior is the thief of the individual 's innocence as the city of London represents what is manmade: "In every voice, in every ban, / the mind-fog manacles I hear": Blake turns to the root of the problem in the next stanza as he brings the church and state into the poem. In literature, the church is usually expressed in white symbolizing purity and often in contrast with children.     The poet used irony and savage criticism of the pretension about the church’s holiness and false religiousness (Emdad). Blake uses irony to convey that the church holds itself to a high moral standard and perceives itself as glorified while at the same time the church’s ignorance and self-interest lead to the death of the chimney sweepers. There is evidence for this in the implied metaphoric reference to the deadly medical conditions when the poem states “they clothed me in the clothes of death” (Blake 7). This metaphoric line in this poem is a reference to the dangerous conditions that led chimney sweepers to experience deadly diseases, deformities and sometimes death. Most of the chimney sweepers were from very poor families whose parents left them to work for wealthy families and survive off of their owner's mercy.
