Stand and Deliver Essay Example
Reflection paper
Stand and Deliver The movie Stand and Deliver takes place in the lower class part of Las Angeles. When the movie starts you see the teacher driving down the street, and you begin to notice graffiti, closed shops, poor people, and gang members. When you finally see the school for the first time, you see that there is no order in the hallways. Students are late for class, disrespectful to teachers, and some students even rigged the fire alarm in order to get out of class early. The teacher observes all of this the first day and doesn’t react, rather he lets the students talk back and throw paper at him. The next day he comes to class with a butchers knife and an apron on and in order to get the class’s attention, he whacks a huge chunk of the apple out in front of the whole class. This immediately gets the students attention and he begins to teach the class fractions. You notice the gang members that hang out in the back of the class. One in particular has to keep his books hidden at home and in the classroom in fear that his gang may see that he wants to learn. I like the way that the professor talks to his students one on one. He comes to them slowly and places his hands slightly in his trousers and he motivates his students with positive reinforcement. He instills the message that if you do not attend his class and do well, you will be serving burgers instead of owning the restaurant. By the end of the movie the teacher has pressed his students to learn calculus, and they all take an Ap exam. The whole class passes the test and because of this they are accused of cheating. The professor is angry with this outcome and he confronts the men who are determining the investigation. I think that the movie will end with the students failing the exam due to cheating. I don’t think the professor will be able to influence the investigators and the movie will end with the students either having to re take the test, or fail it. I do not predict a happy

The characters in “Stand and Deliver” went through a great deal in this movie and all brought something else to the movie. The star of the movie is Jaime Escalante played by Edward James Olmos. Escalante is the teacher of the students that quits his job with a computer company to teach at Garfield High School. He comes to teach computer science, but the school did not get the computers and he has to teach math. He takes over the math class and expects a great deal of his students and challenges the faculty to allow him to teach Mr. Escalante encounters some opposition to teaching calculus from Mr. Molina, the principal and Raquel Ortega, a teacher. Mr. Molina is the principal of Garfield High School played by Carmen Argenziano. Mr. Molina laughs at Mr. Escalante’s idea of teaching calculus, but he supports him when the program gets under way. Raquel Ortega, played by Virginia Paris, is not as helpful as Mr. Molina and she doubts the abilities of the students many different times throughout the movie.…

The AA meeting that I attended was at midnight in Bay City, at the Log Cabin. When I first walked in I was very startled. There were three women and seven men. I was quite overwhelmed and a tad bit scared to be in that sort of predicament. I know going at midnight was probably not the best idea, but it was the only meeting that fit into my schedule. Everyone was very nice to me when I walked in and informed me on how the meeting was held and what went on.…

I attended an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. The meeting I attended was on a Sunday morning at 8am. A group of 11 gathered to share their experiences under the deadly addiction of alcoholism and it was an open lead meeting. It was a very interesting experience for me. I have never been to an AA meeting, so I really didn't know what to expect. When I got there everyone was really friendly and I explained that I was a UNK student and I was just there to observe because I had to write a paper about AA. The first part of the meeting was a reading from the big book as they call it. The first reading summarized the AA creed and the second was a passage from the “book.” I noticed that almost everyone had a copy of it. It looked just like a Bible, and indeed, they treated it as such. A guy reading the mission of AA started the meeting and then a different man read the 12 steps that an alcoholic follows to gain sobriety. Then the lead was introduced and he had everyone go around the room and say their name. When everyone said their name they would say, "My name is "¦and I am an alcoholic." The guy giving the lead told about how he started drinking and the various experiences that he went through while drinking. Some of the things he talked about sounded really rough. It was surprising to me that someone could stand up there and tell their life story and all the awful things they had done. After he talked about her alcoholism, he then began to discuss how he became sober and how great it feels to have his sobriety. Following was a guy in his early 50s who spoke about his sobriety ,he discussed about his struggles with alcohol and how he feels like he don’t have a ‘’real family “, joining these meeting gives him a family that was After the lead, the group leader came up and read announcements. Then a collection basket was passed around, and everyone put some donation into the basket. Then the group leader asked for everyone to hold hands and say the "Our Father" prayer.…

Mr. Escalante is supposed to be a computer teacher at Garfield High School; however, he is told that this high school does not have any computers. As the result, he becomes a math teacher who is determined to “change the system and challenge the students to a higher level of achievement.” Mr. Escalante is at first not well liked by students, receiving an immense amount of laughs and tricks. The reason is that students in this high school focus more on entertainment rather than academics. All those tough situations do not defeat Mr. Escalante. He finds his way to solve them step by step. A person may be blessed with natural abilities, but through human nature, we desire personal connection and motivation. The movie Stand and Deliver told the story of a high school class that fell short of academic requirements. Jamie Escalante was a new, influential teacher who made an impact on inner city students by simply demonstrating interest and faith. Jamie showed attention to the students outside of the classroom and did not give them the opportunity to make excuses. Mr. Escalante cleverly manipulated his students into success with various techniques, a majority of which would help me thrive in math class.…

Detailing a car is like art. You start off with a filthy car. Put some hard work and sweat into it. You, the artist, can turn it into a masterpiece! When I was a young boy, I would help my Dad detail his car every weekend. When I was fifteen, I got my driver’s permit and started detailing cars. I made a simple flyer with colored wording and flashy pictures of exotic sports cars and posted it in my neighborhood. At sixteen with my driver’s license and a car, my business took off. I have quite a bit of experience detailing cars and would like to share with you how to do it step by step. To detail a car properly, you must first start by doing a thorough cleaning of the interior, exterior, and finally by clay barring and waxing it.…

On the dollar bill, it says, “In God We Trust”, not “In Obama We Trust”! I am a republican, and I think I should let you know that I also have an IQ of 16 (mentally unstable), a degree in foolishness, a pet rock, and a masters in “being an idiot”. My fellow fat bellied republicans have been taking harsh criticism for the past few years, when all that we are trying to do is good. Sure, there were a few blunders here and there, but it was nothing that a shot of whiskey couldn’t fix! We really did do some great things for America that the people overlook: we butchered hundreds of thousands of innocent people in the Middle East, we created a completely unnecessary war, we made poor people even poorer, and we decided NOT to help out cancer patients. What more could you ask for? But what did we get in return? People call us liars. The truth is, we’re not liars, we’re just always wrong and idiotic. We are incredibly wrong; it’s just that we won’t admit it because we’re stubborn, as republicans should be. Hell, our motives are based off of just doing the opposite of whatever Democrats are doing!…

That actions and choices you make may affect you in the long run. I know this; because what I did when I first entered high school I am affected by it now. Instead of me going to school all I wanted to do was hang out with my friends, smoke marijuana, and do everything but go to school. I now regret everything I did and wish I could go back in time and redo my high school all over again. Not finishing school takes a great toll on my life now, because now I can’t get a good job to support my daughter. The only job I can really get now is just working at McDonalds or any other kind of fast food restaurant. Flipping burgers and frying fries isn’t what I want to do to give my daughter a good life, so I’m so happy I ran across the Marque Learning Center so I could get my high school diploma and do what I have to do so I could provide for my daughter.…
