One night while dealing with my pain and heartache through music on the radio, I began to pray. I prayed to God that he would send me a good husband. I was very detailed about exactly what I wanted in a husband because I knew what I did not want. After my talk with God, “Making Memories of Us” came on the radio. I immediately noticed the artist’s tone of voice; he sang as if he were truly in love: “You’ve been stretched to the limits, but it’s alright now.” This one line in the last verse made a huge impact on me, and I began to cry hysterically. I was coming from a place where I couldn’t take another bad relationship. I remember thinking to myself how romantic it would be if the love of my…

The life of people during the Great Depression was poverty stricken, jobless, and too many it was hopeless. Life during this time was portrayed very well in the movie “Cinderella Man.” James Braddock is a perfect example of life during this time. He was as poor as the movie displayed him to be and he did have to go receive relief money from the government to heat his house and keep his children. “His Irish-Catholic back round played a major role in the values he held onto, specifically the one of family.” He repaid the relief money as soon as he was able to afford to, in both the movie and real life. James Braddock also fought and worked with a broken hand, just like the movie displayed. “Jim gets an out-of-the-blue, last ditch shot to fight in Madison Square Garden- and more importantly, a chance to put food on the table for those he loves. (The Movie 1)” The two days notice about the fight Braddock received in the movie was accurate to reality. James went back into fighting to feed and keep his family together.…

Just imagine a life without cooking, so basically no food. I’m sure for some people they are thinking; yeah my speech is about food. Well sorry it’s not, I’m talking about the cooking part of the whole food making process. Basically my speech is about how I started to like cooking from the very beginning, also all the history going way back in time for cooking. Cooking is my natural high, whenever I have the chance to cook that is all I do for hours or a whole day if possible. In my opinion I fell that cooking just came to me naturally and I did not even have to get taught anything. Even though you obviously you have to learn the basics first I fell that I didn’t even need too. My passion for cooking all started when I first helped my mom make German chocolate cake. That’s the very first thing I learned how to cook independently with no help at all. After that it was nonstop making everything including cupcakes, Italian cigar rolls, also German cake and sausage. Then shortly after that’s all I did no matter what I was doing or how busy. Everything was great after I learned how to cook well, because me and my grandma tried new things and put different ingredients together every day. Unfortunately all of a sudden some difficult news hit me when I got home from school one day. Well I just began to make a new recipe that my grandma and I just made up to try it out. That’s exactly when my phone rang to say that my grandma died of a sudden heart attack. At that point I was devastated but the only way to make me happy was to keep on cooking to help keep her passion for cooking alive with me. My whole life I already knew that my passion would always be cooking. After my grandma died I realized how much more it meant to me as my passion forever. Well that is my life story of how my passion came to be and why it is still the number one thing to do. Cooking is a little hard to say a definition for. Well cooking is the consumption with the use of heat. Cooking techniques and…

In Anglo-Saxon oral tradition, lyric poems have elegiac tone. Both "The Seafarer" and "The Wanderer" are examples of lyric poems with elegiac tone. In "The Seafarer" the speaker is out at sea and is lonely and misses land. in line three the speaker says, "And forth in sorrow and fear and pain showed me sufering in a hundred ships"(3-4). This is a great example of elegiac tone because he is talking about his sowrrows and pains at sea. Another example in "The Seafarer" is when the speaker says "The death-noise of birds instead of laughter, the mewing of gulls instead of mead"(21-22). This shows how lonely the speaker is and is making out these birds to human. In "The Wanderer", a warrior has lost his lord, kingsmen and comrades in battle and is driven into exile. The warrior says, "Homeless and hopless, since days of old, when the dark earth covered my dear lord's face, and I sailed away with sorrowful heart"(20-23). The quote shows how the warrior's life has become quite sad after his lord died and he lost everything. He also says, "When friends are no more, his future is excile, not gifts of fine gold; a heart that is frozen"(27-28). The warrior is talking about the sorrow of losing his friends and missing them. Both poems show great examplers of elegiac tone. But elegiac tone is not only in poems it is also in modern day songs, such as "Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day. The song talks about the horrible events that have happened in Sepptemer and the pain it brings. Elegiac tone gives the reader or listener a sense of how the speaker feels making the story or song much more…

I experienced a life defining moment on January 15, 2004. That was the day that Demetrius, also known as the most perfect man in the world, asked me to marry him. The weather that day was so nice, the sun was shining, and the air was fresh and crisp. We decided to take a walk in the park to admire the scenery. I did notice that Demetrius’s smile was a little wider than normal, and I assumed he was up to something. I had no idea of what he was about to do. When he asked if we could sit on the bench so he could give me a foot massage, I was positive that something was about to happen. I went along with him, anxious to see what he had in store. About twenty minutes passed before he casually asked “where do you see us in five years?” As I thought of the answer to that question, he stared right into my eyes. I answered, “Happy no matter where just happy. That’s when he gave me a soft kiss on the lips and dropped to one knee. I closed my eyes and thought wow, is this really happing. I was in shock. When I opened my eyes to look at Demetrius, he had pulled the ring out of his pocket and pushed it towards me. “Alisha, will you marry me?” he asked. He anxiously waited for an answer while I sat there speechless. He finally interrupted the chaos that was going through my mind by saying, “Well?” I stumbled across the words, “Of course.”…

The following day, he called me and we talked for hours. I fell in love with his sweet and beautiful voice instantly. We continued conversing over the phone for about four months before deciding to go out somewhere together. We arranged to meet at the Kaw Yam Mu Poe lay Park near the river. After meeting up, we talked endlessly for what seemed like hours until we had nothing more to say. We sat in silence and stared at the water. I still remember the past in the friend’s birthday party. He took my hand and looked me in the eyes and asked me if I would be willing to give my heart to him. I was completely stunned at the question. I knew I loved him and wanted to be with him, but I was too nervous, and I have never had love before. I don’t understand much about love and I felt that I'm not ready for love yet. Hence, I said honestly, "I'm not ready." His face of happiness turned to sadness and he stopped talking. He dropped my hand from his and…
