The information that I have learned about diversity in the United States of America has helped me better understand and relate to others in many ways. The United States of America is a giant melting pot of several different races, ethnicities, and cultures. What I have learned is that each group has their differences and similarities. With these differences in culture they have taught me how to be tolerant and accepting of them no matter how different from me they appear. By accepting the differences in our diverse society I have learned new thoughts and ideas of living, different perspectives of thinking, and have been introduced to a variety of foods that I have never tried before. All in all, it seems in the end that many racial and ethnic groups are different, but they share one common interest which is to love one another and be happy. The most beneficial thing to our society would be the focus on the main interest of all, instead of focusing on how different we are when compared to one another. Focusing on the differences between one another and judging others based on them was something that was done in the past. However, I had come to realize that focusing on the differences and closing the opportunity to learn about other cultures, races, and ethnicities was hindering me in life.…
For our nation to thrive Buchannan note that unity in diversity can’t exist. National identity must supersede state identity for America to survive (68). America experienced a dramatic increase in immigration in the last few years. Soon European-Americans will be a minority in the nation. Buchanan asks, “And when that day comes, what then will united us as a people (68)?” Racial and religious diversity…
“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me; I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"…
During the early 1900's a vast amount of people both immigrated and migrated to the United States in search of money, better jobs, new lives, etc. Yet, the people who immigrated and migrated to the United States were each a part of different cultures: from Italian to German, French to Jewish, Irish to African American (American Cities/New York/African American/Intergroup Relations/Color Lines). New York City was a prime location for the immigrants and migrants of the time to create their new lives. They joked that "The Jews own New York, the Irish run it and the Negroes enjoy it" (American Cities/New York/African American/Intergroup Relations/Color Lines). The single line clearly shows how each group, Jewish, Italian, and African American, had distinct experiences from one another. Although they had experiences that were different, the immigrants and migrants all experienced some of the same feelings, being in a new place, being discriminated against and being alone. After immigrating and migrating to the United States, Eastern European Jews, Italians, and African Americans had experiences that were unique as well as similar to each other.…
We are now in the beginning of the 21st century and like the beginning of the 20th century the United States finds itself in the throes of a period of mass immigration. More then one million immigrants enter the Unites States, both legally and illegally every single year. Many argue that this new wave of mass immigration may help sustain the success that our nation is having in regard to the way of living that many American have come accustomed to and yet other believe that although out nation was created by immigrants it is time to "shut down" our borders. The truth of the matter is that there will always be issues in regard to immigration and the policies that the government sets forth in order control who comes into this country. Also now more then ever immigration policy has a greater affect on the American people because of the fact that we find our selves living in a time of danger or as some might argue, a perceived danger in regard to terrorism. Also with the proposal of President Bush's new guest-worker program raises more issues in regard to immigration. The fallowing paper will attempt to overview current immigration policy and also state what immigration policy should be over the next 25 years.…
During the duration of this course I have learned about social problems within the society in which we live and around the world. It is still troubling to learn that poverty, social inequality, race and cultural discrimination, gender stratification, environmental damage, population growth, and urbanization are among the social problems and controversial issues that still exist in the United States. Social inequality is subject that has been around for many years because of someone’s race, gender, status, wealth. The harsh reality of this situation is that people are being judged and discriminated against for these reasons. Discussed will be the affect that social inequality has on minorities.…
Diversity is when you have a great of amount of variety; very different. Diversity can be different gender, religion, sexuality or race. I grew up in Puerto Ricon then moved to America at the age 7. In America I saw a tremendous diversity then in Puerto Rico. I continued to see as I entered college. African-American, Caucasians, Indians, etc students sit to my left and right.. I learned about their culture and their stories. Some of which my eyes widen as I hear how they got here to America, not all of them bought a ticket and flied over here. I can relate to some of their economics problem for my single mother couldn't even afford a 25 cent donut for my sister when we were younger.…
“The USA was not a ‘melting pot’ but a ‘mosaic’ of different cultures in the period 1890-1910’ Do you agree?…
Some people have different views on whether America cherishes diversity, Eboo Patel is someone who views America as a country that cherishes diversity and Jena McGregor is someone who thinks that America does not cherish diversity. On this topic I think that America cherishes diversity…
The United States of America has about 195 countries and 6,500 spoken languages to interpret, understand, and communicate. Being aware of foreign cultures and affairs is imperative to upholding the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) mission to, “…to ensure a homeland that is safe, secure, and resilient against terrorism and other hazards.” My participation in Second Language Learning and Technology research could aid in improving the way DHS collects domestic and foreign intelligence and decrease the duration of time it takes employees to learn new languages.…
The United State’s motto itself is E pluribus unum, “From many, one.” American identity is the epitome of the metaphoric “melting pot.” In terms of race…
Looking at me you might wonder what I could possibly understand about diversity – middle class white male, college educated, married with two children, a boy and a girl. These broad generalizations describe me, but they do not define me; just as similar ones about others are equally uninformative. They note apparent features while failing to capture inherent uniqueness. To me, diversity encompasses respect and acceptance, concepts defined by actions taken to recognize and understand individuality, not simple toleration of obvious differences. Although I do not write articles or participate in protests demanding change, I quietly respect the dignity of individuals and value their perspectives. My service in the United States Army has profoundly shaped my attitudes and guided my actions supporting these beliefs.…
Some of the most influential entrepreneurs are immigrants. Based on INC. by Adam Bluestein, Derek Cha, who had arrived in America when he was 12 years old with his parents and three siblings. Derek and his family had immigrated due to poop poverty in their home country, South Korea. Derek’s parents worked as dishwasher, janitor and etc. At age 16, Derek started his first job, working at a McDonald's restaurant. Now at age 49, Derek is the owner of the 350-store chain of Sweetfrog, which has more than $34 million in revenue. It had opened jobs for almost 800 people and still growing. This is one of many stories of immigrants who arrive in America for good reasons and help boost the American economy by opening up businesses and providing jobs…
Coming to America from my native born country of Afghanistan was definitely a change to get a grasp of. Growing up here, diversity is very common. I believe United States is definitely a melting pot. We have people from all over the world settle here to create a better life. Growing up in the city of Saint Louis, I would say that diversity was a very common thing. I lived in a street where their were elderly American folks, African -Americans, Mexicans, and Bosnians. I was exposed to a diverse group of people at an early age. Low income communities such as the ones I have lived in tends to be the most diverse as oppose to living in Ladue where their the superior white race is the most common. Diversity is something that I have been comfortable with my whole life, being exposed to it as soon as I came to America definitely has shaped my mentality on this subject in a positive manner. During High school and my college life I have worked at various jobs such as Steak N’ Shake,…
