LOTF - Knowledge Theme
1. Knowledge is important in all aspects of life. It is gained through experience and teaching. Throughout Lord of the Flies by William Golding, knowledge is used and abused. Socrates sums up many events occurring in the book and a certain character with his quote “The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance”. 2. Piggy was the bearer of much knowledge. He had much input but got hardly any credit due to his passive and non-confrontational nature. We see the more egotistical characters walk right over him when really; they should have respected him the most.
2. Piggy’s glasses become an important symbol in the book. The quote on the slide shows they are a part of Piggy’s identity and he cannot live without them. They symbolise a form of protection as they can begin a fire and they give Piggy sight. The boys know this and they abuse their power which leads them to steal Piggy’s glasses for their selfish pleasures leaving Piggy vulnerable. 4. They also act as a symbol of intelligence and knowledge and when Piggy is stripped of his glasses, he changes like a part of him has been ripped off. They are also a sign of scientific intelligence, linking back to the creation of fire.
5. Piggy states in the book, "How can you expect to be rescued if you don’t put first things first and act proper?" showing how he was adamant on getting home and did everything knowledgeable he could to be careful and stay safe and in the end he was one of the few killed by others who he respected. The use of irony helps compare the boy’s situation back to the real world because just being knowledgeable does not mean security. 6. The conch became an authority figure in the book and if it wasn’t for Piggy’s knowledge on it, Ralph would have not been able to blow it and bring the boys together. The conch was respected as a higher order or idol figure, therefore being a biblical reference in the book. Also the fact that both Piggy and the conch were killed and destroyed in the same

For example, Piggy reproaches the boys in chapter two after the group allows a fire to spiral out of control. The wise boy understands the overwhelming importance of the fire, which the others chose to abuse. Whatsmore, in chapter five the boys begin to fear irrational impossibilities. In response to their fears, Piggy attempts to defuse the situation by stating that life is “scientific”, but because of his physical differences the boys choose to ignore him. When Piggy’s glasses are stolen by Jack, the transition from prophet to blind prophet is complete. In one last emotional warning, Piggy lays out a choice for the boys: wildness and savagery or responsibility and rescue. Piggy puts his life on the line, proselytizing the truth none of the boys want to hear, and with no way to defend himself. In thanks for his constant boldness and rationality, the boys chose to murder Piggy. Although a tragic end, Piggy’s death was fitting for a blind prophet with an unwanted…

It seems the boys start to see Piggy as just another animal, and he is therefore killed as though that’s just what he is. The interesting thing is that the boys, because they kill Piggy, sort of become animals themselves. It’s a slippery, slidey, downward slope of atrocity. But animals aside, there’s another key point in Piggy’s death, and that is that the conch dies with him. The conch is smashed into thousands of pieces, which is about as close as an inanimate object is going to come to dying at all.…

As there were no grown – ups Ralph was chosen to be the leader which meant he had to think wisely. Whoever held the conch in his hand had the privilege to speak. The conch symbolizes authority/law. It loses its power as the boys start to become more and more savage. The light of the fire keeps “darkness”/evil/the “beast” away. They needed laws and order. When the boys ignore the fire, (their only hope for rescue and survival) they are sinking deeper into the pool of barbarism.…

Piggy’s glasses represent innovation in a way that aided as well as harmed their society. Using Piggy’s glasses, the boys were able to intensify the sun’s beams which was then used to start the fire. The use of his glasses to create the fire helped their civilization because the fire produced smoke. Then, they used the smoke in order to try to signal anyone that could see it in the efforts…

    1. The conch being inexpertly blown and the fact that Piggy has only one lens shows that society has begun to function poorly. The reason for this decline in society is Jack. Jack broke Piggy's lens, and now Jack who has power, represented by the conch, does not know how to blow it properly. This tells us that Jack is an inept leader who misuses power and destroys knowledge. To become an expert at something, such as blowing a conch or leading a society takes time, so this is also significant because it shows that Jack has just recently come to power. Because the conch and Piggy's glasses are crippled, knowledge and power are crippled, but not yet fully eliminated.

2. When Simon says, " I think we ought to climb the mountain.", he means…

The conch shell is the opening symbol in the novel and lasts roughly to the very end of the story. The conch is found by Ralph and Piggy, which they use to summon the boys together after the crash. “We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us—" (Golding 16). The conch represents civilization and order on the island. In the start the conch is given to a boy to hold when he has the power to speak among the boys. “I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking” (Golding 33). So not only is the conch a symbol but also an actual craft of political authenticity and democratic power. As the boys descend into savagery the conch loses its authority and control among the boys causing the life of the boys to go from order to chaos in a matter of short time. The conch’s power is at its final point when it is destroyed by Roger when he pushes a boulder down castle rock colliding into Piggy who at the time was holding the conch. Piggy is murdered while the conch is smashed into smithereens. This gruesome event signifies the termination of the civilized instinct of almost all of the boys on the island.…

Piggy’s spectacles are an important symbol in Lord of the Flies. Spectacles are usually related to civilization, scientific innovation, and intelligence, because only people in a civilization would have to use glasses. The symbolic meaning of the glasses is because they are used to make the signal fire, another important object in the book. As the book progresses, the condition of the spectacles deteriorate, just like the civilization in the book does. Piggy is no doubt the most intelligent and wise character in the group, thinking of brilliant ideas only one would think in an orderly civilization. His spectacles, then, might also represent the source of his intelligence and scientific mind. With his spectacles stolen, an important part of civilization is taken away, too. Spectacles are used to see clearly, which can also be seen as reason, and Piggy the voice of reason, due to his insight. Piggy’s source of intelligence and science is taken away from him, then what would happen next? The sudden assault of Jack’s group might also represent the condemnation of civilization from the savages. With the owner of the spectacles, Piggy, still alive, what might happen next? It acts as a foreshadowing of the killing of Piggy in Chapter 11, when Jack’s desire to kill the “pig”, Piggy, is fulfilled.…

The courage shown by some characters as the novel progresses is very significant as it shows how the boys are absolutely determined to be rescued, overcoming all of the hardships that face them including the brutality that some of the others show. In the novel, Piggy is always considered an “outcast”; not fitting in with the “littleuns”, yet not fitting in with the “biguns” either. He is subject to ill-treatment because of his physical weaknesses by the others, especially by Jack. Nevertheless he stands up to them and criticizes Jack, a feat which no-one else, other than Ralph would do; for his way of dealing matters, and the lack of cooperation that the hunters have shown, even though he himself is seen as a fool by most of the others.…
