i am special
I am special. I laugh when nothing is remotely funny. I have two left feet but I will dance in the middle of a crowd. I talk too much, I bump into walls daily, and I have a bad habit of biting my nails. I have a tragically terrible voice but I sing in the shower as if I’m a contestant on American Idol. I am unique. My characteristics may delight certain people, yet alienate others. My personality is my own and will not be changed for anything or anyone, aside for me. I run cross country; a sport of which could be considered a football player’s punishment. I play the piano, filling any room with harmonic tones. I extend my limits, open my mind to new things, and cherish the gifts I receive daily. People may not see me as special, but I do. The goals I conquer are for me and if I accomplish them, that is enough to make me feel like a champion. There may be 7 billion individuals walking on this earth, yet I have talents and abilities that contribute to the world in a different way than others do. I dream different dreams and see from a different perspective. I have my own unique fingerprint. I am me, I am not rich or famous, but I live happily with myself. I look in the mirror and smile contently; the girl looking back at me is a reflection I am proud to see.

I don’t know how to begin to define myself in order for you to understand who I truly am. I believe there is more to a person than stories that mould us into who we are today; like when one asks, “Tell me your story," I don’t think about that time when my family broke into two or that time I was diagnosed with my mental illnesses. I think of coffee, because coffee is bitter and bitter people drink coffee, sad people; people with heavy hearts and heavy footsteps, with tangled thoughts, people with anxiety and words left unspoken, people like me. Lonely people drink coffee. I think of the world map I have in my room with thumbtacks marking every country I want to visit. I think of foreign languages, and how beautiful it sounds when words form…

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “To be yourself in a world that is trying to make you something else is a great accomplishment”. A question such as “who am I”? Really gives me the opportunity to differentiate and express who I really am and who I can be. I am not a complex person who thinks the world is against me, nor am I overly sophisticated “know-it-all” who doesn't take time to pay attention to my surroundings. I can't say that I am like every other person because there are certain things that make me a unique individual. What I can say is that I am progressing towards a brighter future.…

I’m a smart man; I am a smart man, but no noegenesis or opsimath (an old dog learning new tricks), besides I’m nauseated by the idea of night school, auxiliary vocation direction but in a sadder manner. I also read the ostentatious and hold my ears to self-important musicians with a challenging complex. I can count the finite set fantastically and with strange rhythms and have done so ever since high-school. I stare at biopics rather than explosions. I suck in pure information, and blow out in halves. I realize the world is there, but don’t always believe it and always keep my head above conspiracy philosophies. I always have a few surprising words up my sleeve in conversation, and I can apply them appropriately or pertinent to flow. I actually…

One thing people have always told me is that I remind them of the person Randall Cobb from the book game changers. He has one of the most creative and unique personalities. He is passionate for the game of basketball by working hard on his time. Randall is also talented in the subjects math and science by pushing himself to make good grades. He also thrives to help people even if it's with school work, personal problems, or on the basketball court. All in all he was almost exact the same person as I am he likes basketball, he helps others, and he does well in school.…

As we look around us we notice that we are different. The differences can be small, such as in twin siblings, or they can be big, such as in neighbors. The size and shape of our bodies, the color of our skin, or even how we fix our hair are physical differences that can be seen on the outside. However, what about the differences we cannot see? Some people are born to be leaders. We all have different beliefs. Every person’s attitude differs on what they perceive. These differences are what make us more unique than our physical characteristics. So what are you?…

Son of famed historian and Pullitzer Prize winner David McCullough, English instructor David McCullough, Jr. delivered one of the most controversial and memorable high-school commencement speeches on June 7, 2012. Addressing over 400 capped and gowned graduating students, family, and friends at Wellesley High School, McCullough’s humorous introduction set the attention-garnering foundation for his main argument: to inspire his audience—and this generation—to be exceptional and lead “[…] extraordinary lives” (McCullough, Jr.). Perhaps the most provocative piece of McCullough’s presentation is his simple and challenging proposition: “You’re not special.” A direct response to the exigence that everyone is uniquely gifted, the phrase was immediately demonized by social media and generated a maelstrom of conflicting responses. But rather than analyze this comment as a self-evident rhetorical entity, it is instead important to review McCullough’s message in context. McCullough effectively frames ethical, logical, and pathetic appeals with preexisting commonplaces and a calculated delivery to further his positive precept for the future generation.…
