I am just a leaf(poem)
I wonder who lived here the year before me, I hear the sky calling me, I see the footsteps below, I want to walk and be free, I am just a leaf, hanging high in the tree, I pretend that I am something that lives on the ground, I feel a touch of branches throughout, I touch a flower that grows close to me, I worry about me growing fast, I cry when I see the stars falling from the sky, I am just a leaf, hanging high in the tree, I understand moments in time, I say tomorrow is another day, I dream about stars deep in sky, I try to do my best in every way, I hope my dreams come true, even though I am just a leaf, hanging high in the tree. This poem is strikingly similar to the style of E.E. Cummings, "pennycandystore" and the poem’s structure that resembles a falling leaf. Alas though, regardless of the argument of which author can claim it as his style first, it adds to the childish inhibitions. After contemplating the leaf image, it begins to feel more allegorical as alluded to in the first paragraph. Perhaps analyzing puberty is superficial and claiming that the loss of innocence stops at this point is limiting the capabilities of the poem to expand. In the last three lines of repetition help to emphasize the theme, but they also create a cyclical narrative form that introduces the idea that the boy has feasibly grasped the notion of death.…

The poem sets the tone at the second line with “I could feel the devil's handprints around my neck” indicating the tone would be dismal and satanic from the beginning. The theme is how fear can torment someone and feel as if someone is trapped in an inescapable, infinite loop of despair. I picked the tone and theme of this poem because Paul goes through many internal struggles within Tangerine. I personally have somewhat of a connection to the poem, when I was still in elementary school I was hurt by my two older brothers by playing games such as “red dots”. I felt like I would be tortured to no end especially when my parents failed to help me.…

"The woods are lovely, dark and deep," This line from the poem Stopping by woods, is saying that the woods are an opinionated place. The woods may be lovely to some, and scary to others. People may consider the woods to be lovely as they may have an interest for nature and it’s beauty. They may also like to see interesting animals, and escape from the reality of life. Some people might want to sit on a tree branch and enjoy the peace and quiet. To some people forests are a dark place, where they can escape to when they want to be alone. People may want to go to the woods to captivate their curious souls, and do something adventurous in the woodlands. Teenagers might want to play around and maybe even invite some friends to hang out with. The…

In these lines, Hall shows that there is timelessness to the cycle of the leaves. Every spring they sprout, and every autumn they fall. However, the leaves become a part of a timeless story, and each year, they help make new memories. Hall expresses the continuity of the leaves’ stories in the final stanza when he says,…

“Slaveship,” by Lucille Clifton, is a free verse poem from the perspective of slaves that the white men capture and trade in the slave trade, forcing them to travel on the Middle Passage. Ironically, the ships bear the names of religious symbols and figures such as Jesus, Angel of God, and Grace of God (lines 14-15) even though the act of slavery is one of the most sinful systems in the eyes of these slaves and in the eyes of all decent human beings.…

It was overwhelming peaceful sitting under the pear tree. I experience serenity under the tree and it becomes has become part of him. It is under the tree, that I begins to find my inner peace and happiness with romance. As a sixteen-year-old girl, lying beneath a pear tree in the spring, I watched a bee gathering pollen from a pear blossom. This experience becomes a symbol of the ideal relationship, one in which passion does not result in possession or domination, but rather in an effortless union of individuals. I had experience an awakening under the blooming pear tree in spring, just before my first kiss with Johnny Taylor. The feeling I experienced directly while sitting beneath it was the sense of possibility in life for a connection between the self and the natural world, and the feelings of love. It is for this reason that Janie feels she has finally reached the horizon with Tea Cake. I have achieved harmony with nature that I have seen since the moment under the pear tree.…

As a boy lays in a field of grass, near a stream, beneath the sun, he sings to the daisies. He is Mother Nature's son. There is a childish peacefulness throughout the song. It is spiritual because Mother Nature is the stream and the wind and the field of grass. There is an almost surreal and dreamlike atmosphere and a certain sweetness in tone.…
