“ Psycho “
Psycho is a suspense horror film made in 1960 by Alfred Hitchcock. When Alfred wanted to produce this film, Paramount did not want to produce it and refused to provide the budget that Hitchcock received from them for previous films with the studio. No one thought the film would be a success, so Hitchcock took matters into his owns hands and set a budget of less than 820,000 dollars. The film is about a young women named Marion Crane who steals 40,000 dollars from a client and runs away to her lover’s house in California. But on the way there she decides to stay at a motel for the night, and the owner was a young man named Norman Bates. Norman seemed normal for a while, his persona was a normal young an that loved and cared for his mother. Norman lived with his mother in a house next to the motel, he was always doing what she said and getting mistreated by her. But the true story is, Norman had killed his mother and her lover years earlier because he felt abandoned by her. This is where the orphan archetype comes in. Orphans feel betrayed and abandoned, Norman was jealous of the men his mother had been with. And often became jealous so as revenge he killed them both. But over the years, his personality became shared with hers. He made up in his own mind that his mother wouldn’t want anyone to come between her son and herself.
Norman’s problem was he was stuck in the phallic stage. The phallic stage is the third stage of child development, occurring between the years of 3 and 6. Between this time Norman must have been mistreated or abandoned by his mother. All the men his mother must have had were hated and envied by Norman because all he wanted was his mother’s love and attention and he felt that other men were a threat to the relationship Norman and his mother had. He felt any other men were competition. After feeling abandoned by her, that is when he killed them.
