A Midsummer Nights Dream - Critical Response
The character that I feel sorry for in the play “A Midsummer Nights Dream”, by the great and famous playwright William Shakespeare is Demetrius.
The story is about a group of four lovers who get lost in a forest outside Athens. These four lovers begin to argue over who loves whom after Oberon, the king of the fairies puts love juice in the two men’s eyes, thinking that this would fix their problems but instead this seems to make everything worse. At the same time, Oberon is trying to persuade Titania, Queen of the fairies, to give him on Indian boy to make part of his train. Titania refuses to give up the boy, which leads to Oberon taking the situation in to his own hands. Oberon puts love juice in Titania’s and this makes her fall in love with a man who has had a magic spell put upon him making him have the head of an ass. After Oberon hears of what Titania has done he sees the error of his ways and puts things right with Titania and the four lovers.
The first reason that I feel sorry for Demetrius is that he was told by the woman that he loved that she did not love him in return.
“If I refuse to wed Demetrius”
This line shows that Hermia does not want marry Demetrius in a very blunt and harmful way. The sentence is quite short and blunt and makes an impact on the audience.
My next reason for feeling sorry for Demetrius is that the woman who really does love him is the one whom he does not like in the slightest. Helena, the woman who loves Demetrius says
“I am your spaniel; And Demetrius, the more you beat me I will fawn on you.”
The dialogue shows just how much Helena loves Demetrius without her being given the same feeling back. The playwright has used a metaphor in Helena’s speech, making the strength of her feelings clear.
Another reason why I feel sympathy for my chosen character is because he had to find out from Helena that Hermia and Lysander had run away together instead of being told by Hermia
