2. Regisseur: Peter Greenaway

3. Jahr/Land/Dauer/Farbe: 1985/Großbritannien, Niederlande/112 Min./Farbe

The Book of Kells is a lavish bible filled with intricate artwork that was created in 800 CE. Around 1,200 years later an animated movie describing the story behind the creation of the Book of Kells, called The Secret of Kells, was created. Even though the Book of Kells and The Secret of Kells were created 1,200 years apart, the original manuscript influenced the creators and animators of the movie.…

Rarely has a film impacted an audience and held the test of time as the film Gone with the Wind. I have always been curious if director, Victor Fleming and producer, David O. Selznick and screenplay writer, Sidney Howard knew what they were creating a masterpiece and how this film would have such an enormous impact on audiences for years to come. Interestingly enough there were some who thought the film should not be made, as Irving Thalberg said to Louis B. Meyer in 1936, “Forget it Louis, no Civil War picture ever made a nickel” (Ten Films that Shook the World). This romantic melodrama was released in January, 1940, yet it was at the 1939 Academy Awards that Gone with the Wind was nominated for thirteen awards, the eight awards that were won were Best Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actress, Screenplay, Color Cinematography, Art Direction, and Editing (Ten Films that Shook the World). ”If the total income for Gone with the Wind were to be adjusted for inflation, it would be considered the most successful of all time” (Ten Films that Shook the World). When you think of “Gone with the Wind” from a film criticism standpoint, it’s hard to judge it by the Auteur Theory, which states that the director is supreme overlord of a films artistic merit because in the case of Gone with the Wind, Fleming takes a back seat to Selznick. The film chronicles the grandeur and splendor of the Old South, how it crumbles during the Civil War and the New South during reconstruction. The characters are basically simple folk living a simple life until their world is shattered by the Civil War and this devastation creates a new world, one which will require courage and resilience to survive. Selznick genius in the aspects of cinematography lighting, sound, costumes and societal impact and genre…

The film opens with a close up shot of Alex dressed in white with gray suspenders showcasing his false eyelashes on his right eye and with the brim of his pork pie hat tilted slightly downward. His ominous blue eyes peering right through you as if you did not even exist. Slowly the camera pulls back as Alex takes a sip of drug laced milk revealing the type of company he keeps. His “droogs” as Alex called them were seated next to him on a bench in the Korova Milk Bar. The Korova Milk Bar was decorated with nude figures of women posed as if they had fallen backwards and they attempted to catch themselves by putting their arms behind them. The flats of their stomachs doubled as a table where glasses of milk could be placed. Other nude statues…

Morris’s dream throughout his life was to make it to the big leagues and play with the very best in the game. He faced multiple challenges that tried to hold him back from his dream. In this essay I will be arguing that the relationship between Stephen and Madame Azaire is intangible in the opening of Birdsong. I think that the reason Faulks has done this is to engage the reader so that throughout the novel it is unclear on how their relationship is going to develop. I will be exploring a number of different encounters with Stephen and Madame Azaire. I will be talking about how their relationship is shown at the beginning of the novel and how they act around each other when they first meet. Faulks also uses a lot of references to eye contact when talking about Madame Azaire and Stephen and I will be exploring the importance of this. I will also be exploring how Faulks describes the character of Stephen and how he contrasts with the other male characters. Also I will be looking at the language Faulks uses when describing Madame Azaire.…

Eva represents a distinctive unit of the Von Geislers which historically resembles those who were brutally killed in concentration camps during World War II. Her impact in the film depicts some true-life events that occurred to child victims. Eva’s appearance is one significant feature she shares in common with young females in the 1940s. Her white delicate dress and matching ribbon in her pigtails resemble what typical young girls would wear. Symbolically, this outfit is relic of her past before she was abducted by the Von Geislers. It is intended to represent her life with her real family, and now it is indicative of where she has stopped growing mentally. In historical context, Eva is meant to represent young Jewish girls that were able…

Movies have always been a way to escape the world for a little while. Comedies, action films, and even horror; what happens in movies doesn’t always happen in real life, but sometimes it does. They open doors to the past, present, and future. I just finished watching the movie Elizabeth (1998) and the funny thing is I actually learned. Elizabeth is a great movie because while being entertaining it shows many of the 6 main themes of AP World History. War, violence, and religion are all parts of this movie, each part of a different theme. Now I would like to explain how this movie relates to World History.…

Citizen Kane, directed by Orson Welles, is considered to still be one of the world’s greatest movies ever produced. Citizen Kane is a powerful dramatic tale about the uses and abuses of wealth and power. It's a classic American tragedy about a man of great passion, vision, and greed, who pushes himself until he brings ruins to himself and all around him. From the scene depicting Kane’s meeting Jim Gettys, the audience observes that Kane has aborted his youthful ambitions and has become self-absorbed, which leads to his downfall. Welles conveys this to viewers in this scene by mise-en-scene, camera angles, movement, and lighting.…

Pursuing this forward, when kevin was born he tended to cry uncontrollably and Eva would just let him cry. Without showing him any type of love, affections, or catering to his needs. In the eyes of a psychodynamic therapist they would say his disorder started from home. It's always the mother's fault she did not show an abundant amount of love, guidance, support or trust. Kevin states that his mom's room looks dumb with all of her geographical photos. Eva states that she likes them and she can help him with his room to make it special as well. Movies are all about taking you on an adventure. They expand our minds, they bring our imagination to life, and manipulate our emotions. Directors do this in many ways, whether they are peculiar camera angles and shots, extreme lighting, or music that intensifies a scene. If a director correctly implements these within their movie, the audience’s emotions can very easily be manipulated.…
